HOB Power Filters For A 20 Gal

Anyone recommend a good HOB filter for a 20 Gal Tank?

Fluval C4 Love it! I use the bio media but have removed the sponge filter. While it does a great job of polishing (the sponge filter), I found it quickly became a nitrate factory. I use a bag of Chemi-pure elite instead (in the sponge filter slot) and am very happy with it. The C4 also allows adjustment between a low to higher flow.

Aqua Clear Fluval Power Filter 30 gallon would work for you. Buy a media bag for your carbon. It's easy to clean. I use it on my holding tank after TTM

Seachem tidal 55. Awesome filter. Best I've ever used and I've had a lot over the yrs.

It has a since pump- silent! Surface skimmer, fully controllable flow, 2 intakes. A huge basket that holds plenty of media.

I'll have to check these out and try one out. What about protein skimmers? Do I even need one? Or is there a nice small compact size unit that won't take room in my tank?

I'll vote Aquaclear as well. I've been using them for years, they are workhorses, last a long time as long as you keep them clean, and super easy to use.

I have a 36 bowfront and I ended up using an Aquaclear 70 with a skimmer box. That Aquaticlife 115 actually fits perfectly inside of it. I run no media in the AC70, just the skimmer. But I also run a canister filter that I pretty much just have filter floss and once in a while put carbon in it.

Here's that skimmer box. A little expensive but I was having a problem with this brown film on the surface of the water and this was the best thing. I tried the other type of skimmer attachment but the adjustment was a hassle. http://a.co/ahfOToB

I use the Reef Octopus 100 HOB for a protein skimmer. It does take up some room in your display tank but the ability to skim out the organic compounds works for me. Actually, the amount of equipment in my tank, filter, skimmer and power heads has me building a sump for the aquarium to get most of that equipment out.

I run fluval FX6 on all my tanks. I have a large skimmer box on each one. Inside each box I have a handmade filter sock, input for the FX6 and the skimmer input. The filter sock has helped cut down on maintenance on the filters.

I have a 20 gallon and the Aqueon 30 has worked well for me. I just use filter floss behind the bio grid and cut carbon strips with imagitarium carbon pads. As you can tell I'm a cheap bastard. But the great thing about a HOB is you can pretty much put whatever works best for you in there. I change the media once a week with my water changes and thoroughly clean it once every 4-6 weeks.

I was just thinking, I have a 2 gallon tank, and plan to get an aquaclear 20 hob filter for it,it filters 100 gph. Is this too much? This means my tank water is turned over 50 times every hour, will this be too much filtreartion or maybe create too much current for my corals? Please help.

I have a Marineland dual biowheel (emperor) that was in continuous use on a 60g cube for almost 30 years and still has the original impeller. I use it now for my QT. IMHO, as HOB filters go, you really can't beat the Marineland brand. There is a slot for a particle filter and another for biological filtration. The replaceable cartridges come pre-loaded with carbon.

As mentioned above - whichever way you go I would add at least one small power head for additional water movement.

I have an Aqumaxx 17 gallon just setup. I am using the Aquaclear 70 with
the walmart polyfil and 2 bags of Seachem Matrix, then the original aq70 biofoam.

Along with the Aquaticlife 115 Skimmer and Jebao PP-4 wave maker.
The PP-4 is much too powerful, reshaped my sand bed so I switched from 24VDC
to 12VDC power supply.
