HOB Refugiums

Hello all,

With my recent insane nitrates spike, I have started to research HOB fuges. Because of my current skimmer, I only have 8-9" maximum for length on the back of my tank. Depth is 6" or less, and height is 36" or more.

The problem is...all HOB pre-made fuges I can find are 12" long or more. I have an Aquaclear 50 on the back too now for charcoal duty, and no other filtration media.

I want to do a HOB because I don't want to drill the tank, (30g tall acrylic) and the stand area underneath has very little room.

I feel I need to add a fuge to aid in nitrate reduction, because my water changes haven't seemed to help yet. I have cut feeding to tiny portions as well as I test for the nitrates.

Any advice would be great.

I did an AC70 refugium mod before I upgraded to a CPR AquaFuge and it worked well for me. It's a little bigger then your AC50 and it's easy and cheap to do. Do a search for AC70 refugium mod in the DIY forum.

OK, today I bought some macro and an AC20 impeller, because the 50 was way too much for it. The macro was slapped up against the "guard" with the 50, and only a piece or two here and there will do it now.

I filled the bottom with live rock rubble as well, and I am hunting for a small light now. I am trying to cheat some light in there from my T5 until then
