Hoeven's Wrasse Advice / help

We currently have a hoeven a wrasse in a 60 cube with a pair of black clowns.

It has only been three weeks but the wrasse only makes a brief appearance everyday.

Bottom line: would it be beneficial to introduce another wrasse?

I probably wouldn't. A new wrasse may cause it more stress and delay the process of getting comfortable. I had a hoevens and it took a bit before he even came out of the sand at first. I would give it more time. The hoevens is an awesome wrasse, he was in of my favorites. Unfortunately I had to re-home him as he became a snail murdering maniac. I couldn't keep any snails with him..

Clowns can get pretty territorial, are you sure they aren't picking on him at all when he does come out?

Give it more time.

When you do add another wrasse (what type, btw), use an acclimation box.

The clowns will have their own territory.

Adding another wrasse should not.be problematic. Sometimes fish are a bit more tentative when they dont see too many other fish around, as in the wild this could mean there is a predator around. Rhey also come from the opposite side of the world, so getting its internal clock on our schedule can take some time as well.

Give it time. This fish is worth the wait. My Royal Gramma didn't come out until I added a wrasse. Then it was out all the time.

Any chance this guy would be the culprit behind a recent hermit homicide?

I was hoping to add a Xmas wrasse but haven't checked the compatibility yet. Never used a acclimation box... Worth a shot to see if it eases the transition.

Part of the reason I got my melanurus was to "protect" my SPS. (Plus, they are very pretty and personable, IMO.)

So, today I got a new acro colony and while I was giving it its dip, I noticed a decent sized acro crab nestled in it. The dip did not dislodge it, and I wasn't sure if it was alive or dead, and I didn't want to risk hurting the acro trying to get it out, so I thought I'd just put it in the tank and see what happened.

The melanurus (nicknamed "fatty" cause he never misses a meal) watched me place the coral and sat hovering inches from it while I got it into place. No sooner was I out of the water, when he went after that crab. He deftly pulled it out of the acro, dropped it once to get a better hold, then grabbed it again and repeatedly smashed it against a rock until it broke into many pieces. He quickly gobbled up all the bits and even had part of its shell in its mouth and swam around the tank seeming to proclaim, "I AM KING OF THE CRABS!"

Was entertaining...I love that fish.

Mine chased every other wrasse out of the tank not to mention turned all clean up crews to dinner. Great fish otherwise had mine for 6 years.

Well i gave it a shot and swear the Melanurus was gonna break the acclimation box to get at the Xmas wrasse. Rather than clowns through the stress of these two wrasses Fighting it out I decided to keep Xmas and return the Melanurus. Unfortunately catching the Melanurus and the sandstorm it caused defeated the purpose. Thanks to all for the assistance!
