first what type of clam is it?
next if a clam is kept under inadequate lighting,it's already at a disadvantage
and on top of that it has a Hole in it(damaged)I would say he can keep it.

That's the most light demanding of all. ALthough it probably isnot the cause of the hole, the light is definately a concern.

If he's your friend, and a conciencous reefer then he would give it to you and you would take it, at least to heal up before he could sell it to someone that's not too eager to buy a clam with a hole in it (which should heal if taken care of).
If you have to buy it then you shouldn't support his business practices...they'll probably just order another one to put in it's place.
If the store has several hundred watts of PC over the tank (more/less depending on size depth) then the clam very well may survive, heal, and be bought by a reefer who will take care of it (assuming the clam is healthy in other aspects). Assuming light is inadiquate and the clam is otherwise healthy it could take awhile to starve to death and someone may buy it in that time with a discount or something and nurse it back to health. But if it's not otherwise healthy then you may not want your friends clam dying in your tank.
You probably have the the bluest tank I would ever see though, so if you get it you should put it as close to the light as possable.

Cheers,
