Holes in sand

Can anyone advise me on what cause these holes to appear in my substrate?

The micro fauna living within the sand bed is probably responsible for creating those holes/burrows. Some of them look like pockets of gas too though.

Put a stick into it I bet bubbles come out.

Thank you for your help AISimmons.

My tank is (what I believe coming to end of cycle. Minimal bloom, small patch of diatoms.

Should I be weary of this, how do you I advise I deal with it?

No worries... What your seeing is totally normal. (one way or the other)

primarily gas pockets there isnt enough living in your sand bed yet to create that many burrows, it takes time for the water to displace all the air in the sand bed as well as in the sand particles themselves it will take time and settle out, it is nothing to worry about

That is absolutely normal and totally fine..
Nothing you need to do but accept it as normal and fine

Its gas pockets.. Likely either trapped oxygen or nitrogen from the denitrification process..
