Man stopped with 300 pounds of coral rock:

"A man was arrested this afternoon at Crandon Park Marina in Key Biscayne after the U.S. Coast Guard found 300 pounds of live coral rock in his boat, officials said.

''It's a very serious thing, especially considering the fragile state of coral in South Florida,'' said Officer Jorge Pino, a spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

There is a black market for live coral, Pino said. He did not know how much 300 pounds might fetch, but said it would be ``a pretty penny.''

''You have to have a special permit to harvest this stuff, and we don't issue them very regularly,'' Pino said. ``This gentleman appears to have pulled them up illegally.''

Authorities have the coral submerged in water to try to keep it alive so it can be replanted, Pino said."

Wow that's a HUGE NO NO. I hope he gets whats he deserves!!!

Wow. I wouldn't worry, because more than likely he'll be serving jail time. Jesus. I've seen guys get busted at the beaches in boca with like 1 or two medium sized rocks.

This old dude was swimming, and I guess he liked the rock that he saw, and took it up to his car after swimming. He and his wife were talking outside the car, getting ready to leave, when a park ranger and Boca police officer ran over and handcuffed him, and took him away. That was an interesting experience....

One or two little rocks, maybe a soft coral (which is fine as long as it wasn't attached!) is okay, but really. 300lbs? Are you for real? Totally not cool.

Well I know a few stores in Miami that definately don't sell "legal" rock. ;p Its unfortunate, but still not that uncommon.

I honestly don't think florida rock is that nice, its very dense and mostly branchy. I like my Haitian rock just fine.
