Holy Maxi-Mod!

Ok, ummm, how do you guys use these things? :eek1: I built my own maximod pretty much identical to the one on mjmods.com. The cowling was a PAIN to turn on a lathe, but I got it done. One problem though... I built it too well :(. The thing tosses my 45 around like a ragdoll. I was planning on using just one of them but there's no way this thing can stay in my tank. Am I right to be having so much flow that I have to struggle to hold the pump straight? (it feels like its trying to fly out of my hand just holding it in the tank)

The MJ mods are great for and almost everything as expected. One thing which I did not expect was the noise. You hear a humming noise which gets annoying.

The MJ mods rock. I had been using a couple of noisy old style mods I had purchased from someone in the selling forum and was about to give up on mods completely as they kept breaking every week. I ended up buying two of the high flow MJ1200 mods from mjmods.com and I just can't get over how much of a difference there is!! I had one of them in my 55QT tank my sps are in and had to take it out as it was blowing the flesh off some of the corals. They are both in the 125 now and I am quite sure I'm all set on flow now. =)

Someone should post a video of feeding time so you can see the flow better. The quality online doesn't allow you (at least me) to see much more than a torch moving. The bubbles are cool but they just rise to the top. I'd be interested to see how far the current carries.

Lol, I agree! My hermits are so ****ed at me for putting a MJ900 modded out with the low flow kit! It moves some very serious water and will roll my hermits end over end when they walk across the bottom close to it!!

Huh, so that whipping effect of the torches, frogspawns, hammer, and my bubble coral is OK? Its just so drastically different from what I'm used to seeing. I'm gonna need to get some epoxy putty then I guess and try again as it blew some of my frags off of their superglued posts.

hummm, thats another possibility Gary. Btw, I dont know what everyone's talking about theirs being noisy, mine's quieter than my freakin sedra or Mag 7

And btw Gary, thanks for those spare MJs, here's a shot of it in its new life :D

Mike what did you use for the housing? the outer part?
looks like a reducer, also were did you buy the parts? You think Niagara Hobby may have the parts?

Yeah, it looks like a reducer but it was actually solid black acrylic stock that I turned down on a lathe. I asked the maxi mod rep over in the sponsors forum what size the cowling was and he happily told me. So then I took some black acrylic stock and cut it to size. I forgot how hard it was to do good tapers like that. He said it was some kind of reducer, but I forgot where he gets them. I'm sure if you asked him nicely he'll tell you. I wanted the lathe practice just to keep me sharp :).

I got the propeller from Field's Hobby which I think is the place you're talking about on union behind the Galleriea (Field's Hobby is the old name) and just dug some appropriate sized stainless rod and shaft out of the closet here at work.

If you want to do your own and lack a lathe to make it yourself, definitely go ask the maxi mod rep over in the sponsors forum section. He's real helpful :)

Edit: Dont forget to use a thin washer on the end between the magnet and the stopper. Really keeps the noise down
