Home for the next 6 weeks or so

Satori

Cancer Sucks
I got the new 37 gallon all set up and the fish trapped. The main one is the Powder Blue Tang. He has white spots/bumps on his fins and face.

The Atlantic Blue Tang and Yellow Tang had to come too because I think I need to keep all 3 tangs together to prevent any problems when it comes time to re-introduce to the main tank.

The red wrasse is in there because he may be the source. It was only after he was stressed and skinny from being trapped in the overflow for a few days that the PBT got the spots/bumps.

I've started reducing the specific gravity, aiming for 1.009 over a two day period, and will leave it there for 6 weeks or so, according to the many Ich threads I've seen in the last two days. I have an extra auto-topoff system to keep the SG exact.

I mainly wanted to start this thread so I have a record for myself of when it started. :)

With this being my first hyposalinity treatment, have any of you had personal experience with this?

Yes, the water changes are a pain, but it works! For the first 10 days I had to keep doing water changes to keep the amonia down, then voila! no more amonia issues. It seems to be much easier on the fish than the copper treatment. Best of luck!

Best of luck!

Thanks! At least with it being so barren, it'll be easy to siphon crud off the bottom.

 I set it up with a sump and everything "for future expansion"...
It's not drilled because they don't sell RR tanks here in SV, but it'll be easy enough to drill. After the treatment, this might be a good candidate for a Calfo style overflow. The bottom is clearly marked "TEMPERED", so any overflow will have to be through the back.

Let me clarify musicbabe's statament- she started hypo-saline, then she went on vacation, and I did the daily water changes! With 1.009 sg water, of course, heated and PH adjusted. And each time, her magnificent foxface acted like he was dying. I aged 10 years in 4 days(LOL). YI also did hyposaline on my own fish last fall- worked well, but you will lose your cycle, and need to do the water changes. I was told to let ride it out with the ammonia & nitrites, but I just couldn't do it. It took a week for the cycle to re-establish, on my QT and on Musicbabe's.

When you say the cycle re-established, did you have anything in the QT tank, like substrate, decorations, or filter pads? Just wondering what surfaces the bacteria grew onto?

Also, did you treat every fish from the tank, or just the ones with symptoms?

Update. I'm still working my way down to 1.009, should be there tonight or tomorrow morning.

All the spots/bumps have dissappeared off the PBT. It may not have been Ich, but I'm going to follow through with the full treatment just in case.

Even though these bumps came and went when Ed had him, I wouldn't want to be responsible for letting Ed's fish die... :fun5:

Consequently, I didn't realize how much the three Tangs graze. The tank was completely clean when the tangs came out, now look at this powerhead! :D

I put live rock in my Qt. So did Musicbabe. At first I just used my sponge from the HOB filter, but it wasn't enough. I also added cycle. I put all my remaining fish in QT- there weren't many. Musicbabe also put all her fish in the QT- it is a 35 gallon, so it's big enough. I took a bag of those biobeads from the fluval on my main tank and put it in QT.
According to Tim @ SWsaltwater, and the folks @ Magestic, you need some rock in hyposaline- I guess it turns into base rock.

That is so funny mike! I just posted a thread looking for hair algae for my tangs to graze on. They work wonders dont they? What do you plan on doing to stop it from going out of control?I hope eveything works out for you and if there is anything I can do let me know.

QT is going great. All the fish seem to be doing great. I don't have anything in there for bacteria, but ammonia hasn't really been an issue. I've only had to do two water changes. Ammonia is at .25.

Sorry Gary, I forgot to repy to this one!
The algae doesn't seem like it's really spreading too bad. A patch on the back glass has gone away. There's still some on two of the power heads, but none on the rocks or sand.

Oh yeah, one surprising thing. Of course, the SG in the QT tank is 1.009. However, there are two nassarius snails that ended up in there when I moved the fish, and the snails are still doing fine!

I got probably a dozen out that came over with the fish trap, but missed these two. When I noticed them a couple days later, I thought I would leave them in there to see what happens. I'll let you know if they make it through the whole 6 weeks.

Granted, they're probably a little hungry, but there is never any fish poo on the bottom. The snails attack it as soon as it falls out the fish...
