homemade filter sock hangers

OK, I make my own filter socks first of all. The way I make them is to sew on a strap as a means of "hanging" these. Traditionally I just lap a piece of 1" PVC across the top of my sump through the strap and let the filter sock hang from that. It works fine, but it looks, well, stupid. I would like to make something a bit more creative and practical for when I change out the socks. I have been simply dropping my flex hose from the overflow down into the socks. I'm looking for better ideas for my sump, which is acrylic. I know you guys are DIY gurus so if you have an idea please put it on the table. Pics are worth a thousand words.

I make my own also and it sounds just like yours. I have two loops across the top and put a piece of pvc pipe through them and across the sump....:D

I have a couple pieces of acrylic lying around and I was going to make a clip for the side of the sump. I was going to make it like the standard ones except I would have a couple hooks to hold the sock instead of the 3/4 circle to slide the store bought ones on. I haven't tried yet since my current method works and have been busy. I admit that it does look ghetto.

Here is the clip I want to copy, but remove the circle part and put hooks for the loops on my sock:

Tagging along.

I added a filter sock to my sump setup a couple of months ago, and I'm also interested in an easier way to get the socks in-and-out to clean them.

I made mine out of a piece of scrap acrylic and some 1/2" PVC left-overs. I cut a hole large enough for the sock, but smaller than the sock's ring, in the center of the acrylic. I then drilled four holes, one in each corner of the acrylic, sized for 1/2" PVC. Assembling a framework out of the PVC fittings was cake.

You can see most of it in this pic:

The way my sump is made it has a large center brace that measurces 18" wide x about 12" long that causes a large unused area in my sump under it. I was thinking about drilling it for 2 1" bulkheads to install and elbow and a 1" connector to hook up my flex hose. Then making some type of rack for two filter socks under it so I wouldn't have to handle the flex hoses as much. The flex hoses would hook up to the sump just like a wet/dry would look. But I need to come up with a design for the rack. Dunno whether to build it from 1/2" PVC or what.

hyperfocal, are your socks homemade? My socks do not have the rings to be able to mount like yours. But yours looks very effective. What could one use to make rings for these socks?

No, the socks are commercial. If I were to make my own, I'd probably make a ring using poly tubing closed into a loop with a John Guest union connector.

Sump Filter Socks

Are you guys putting these in the refugium or in the outlet for the return? I am having a problem with debris getting sent from refugium to the tank when I turn on and off.

This a resurrection of an old one! I put them catching the return from the tank. If you are getting detritus building up in your fuge you are in for some serious nutrient issues!
