homer1475's Biocube 29 Build Thread

Looking like I need to take my maroon clown back. He/she is nipping at both my feather dusters, and won't let them open. Almost seems like he is nipping at my flame angel also. They are still swimming together, but I noticed this morning some of the angels fins are torn and/or nipped at. They're the only 2 fish in the tank, minus the CUC and cleaner shrimp.

BTW I have a huge grin on my face, its a "I told you so" moment with my wife, she wanted it even after I told her how aggressive they get.

So I got one hell of a deal!!!

Just so happens my LFS is running a special this weekend, buy one get one clownfish, any type, any kind or coloration. I ended up with 2 snowflake ocellaris for 50$!! He gave me 30 for the maroon, each snowflake was 80, BOGO offer, 2 snowflake clowns for 50$.

He had 2 midnight ocellaris that were super cool(solid black with just a small white spot around their mouth), but he told me that they were by themselves cause they were somewhat aggressive, so I didn't get them. I really could have gotten them, but opted for a smaller less aggressive breed. Could have picked up the pair for 130$.

Just getting home after a 2 hour drive. Looks like everyone is OK.

Drip acclimation before going in QT.

Nice addition. As interesting as maroon clowns are, they're frequently VERY aggressive. They've been known to draw blood from people and kill their tankmates. It's probably for the best that you were able to swap him for these two (or at least partially).

That being said, my sweet little non-maroon male clown (A. Percula I think) attacks hands in the tank viciously, but I think they're defending eggs in a hole in the rock, so that would explain the aggression.

I believe my flame angel may have ich :(

Woke up this morning to a cold tank(heater died overnight) 68.7 F, flame angel has a couple small white spots on him. He was QTed for 6 weeks with no issues. Luckily he's the only fish in the DT right now, so throwing him back in QT shouldn't be an issue. The only issue is I don't want to put him in the tank with my clowns, so I might run out to petco, or walmart and pickup another 10G for another QT(my wife is not going to be happy with another tank lol).

I'm going to leave the angel in the DT for a little while longer, while I run to the LFS for another QT tank and new heater, and see if its not just micro bubbles I'm mistaking for ich. I've done that before only to see a couple hours later they have disappeared.

If my understanding of ich is correct, only way to rid my DT of it and not hurt my corals, is to leave the tank fallow for 8 weeks. My wife won't like that either.

yes if ick then you need to leave the DT fallow for roughly 73 days.

You might also want to lookin to the tank transfer method to treat the angel and then if you put him in the qt with the current clowns to cut down on number of tanks treat there but know that your QT time starts all over. Not really an issue if you need the dt fallow for 2 months but just saying.

DO NOT get impatient and put fish back in before 72 days. Some people go even longer to be sure but you would have for the ick to come back after waiting for so long.

I think it was just micro bubbles, nothing present on the fish, and he's acting normal. I'll definitely keep an eye on him.

Bought another 10G and supplies for it, just in case.

I would monitor for at least 3 weeks to be safe before adding your fish from QT. Not sure where they sit time wise so that might be the plan anyway but give the DT time to show if something is in there.

You know if you had had an apex you would have been alerted to the faulty heater and dropping temps...... Yes totally trying to spend your money....

Yeah definitely going to keep an eye on him. My clowns have at least another 4 or 5 weeks to go in the QT, so no issue if it does present itself.

Its funny, since spring has sprung here(still have some snow in the backyard), and the windows have been open, I need the heater to maintain temps. During winter when I setup the tank, was thinking I needed a chiller because I couldn't get the temp below 79, and didn't even have a heater in the tank.

Guess I'm old school, still cannot wrap my head around using automation and controllers, although something like this makes me rethink things. Sometimes you can teach an old dog new tricks! :D

they are set up for morons like us now with the web interfaces and the lack of need to code anything unless you want to go hardcore.

My alarm went off the other morning for tank being too warm (I set it for 81 so I know well in advance if something goes weird) Nothing starts turning off in my tank till 84.

Went down and found my temp probe had been dislodged and was against my heater causing the spike in temp reading. Moved it and all was well. Though had something actually been wrong I had a heads up to address it.

I have no issues with coding, I do have a computer science degree, and 10 years experience in coding, yet I have no idea why I went to the CIA later in life? Maybe to get out of the rat race of cubicle life? I really do enjoy cooking even though the pay isn't quite as good, even as a head chef, but there is way less stress, and I'm doing something I finally enjoy doing so it's not like a real job. My mother always told me "if you do something you really like, its more fun then a job". This definitely holds true, least for me.

It's not the coding that scares me, its the feeling of being "out of touch" with my tank because so much is automated. I really wouldn't need to do a lot other then look at it, and my weekly water changes. Still can't seem to justify the price for things I can do myself. To each their own I guess. Maybe when things get a little more hectic at work and I'm not home as much, I'll reconsider buying one.

Anywho, finally got a flipper nano ordered, finally found someone on ebay that had a couple for sale. Seems everyone is out of stock. They either didn't make a lot, or they are super popular. Also ordered the tunze nano ato, and a cobalt neotherm 100W heater. Didn't go for the 150watt because I have a 100W in there now and it does fine, plus the up cost of 50watts didn't really seem like it was worth it.

I was told something similar: "If you enjoy your job, you will never work a day in your life". Sadly for me, and I'm sure I speak for a lot of people, finding that job is difficult.

Finding the job is easy for most I think but getting it to pay anywhere near what you need is the tough part. There is no way I would be making 6 figures messing with fish tanks or watching movies. lol

I definitely make less money, but it was the price I was willing to pay to get out of the rat race, and actually enjoy my job instead of it being work. I definitely work harder, but I enjoy it, so don't mind it.

I just live a simpler life, and don't have as many toys as I used to. I have to be more frugal with it is all. #1 reason why I have a 30g biocube and not a nice 150G reef:D
