homer1475's Biocube 29 Build Thread

From threads I've read, I think where people go wrong with it, is they actually try and inject it into the aiptasia. If you read the instructions and follow them(it tells you to just squirt it around the oral disk so it closes up on the needle, then cover the entire oral disk), they actually implode.

Ya, they usually close up quick once you get near it. hard to sneak up on those things lol

Kind of hard to tell from the pics, but it has a central oral disk, with long clear tentacles with well defined white balls on the end. Haven't seen any pictures of Majano that looks like this.

Hey there! Not sure if was addressed already in the thread (I read most of the 21 pages :)) but this is a Pseudocorynactis, which is actually part of the Corallimorphidae (same as mushroom) family. There are orange ones that look really cool!

Yeah I have a couple orange ones on the other side of the tank, and a rather large orange one inside a rock.

Bah Steve can change the order for you super easy. I should seriously get a referral bonus from him for as many people I have sent his way...

Very cool that you posted about his site. Great looking tanks, and I love that they are already drilled for Herbie or Bean Animal options. Definitely a place to keep in mind for the future, and I'm going to pass the site along to a co-worker who is in the quoting process right now for his new setup.

FYI you can not do a bean animal with an internal overflow the way theirs are designed. I suppose you technically could with the return running over the tank, but you would never be circulating the water that's coming in from the bottom wiers, and a ton of junk would settle down there. You would need a shorter overflow and not one that reaches the entire depth of the tank.

To keep the nice clean look, I'm going to do a herbie with the third drilled hole for the return.

Regardless of drain type (bean/herbie) you would want the main drain a few inches above the bottom of the overflow and as such you would always have some "dead" spots in the overflow. The bottom weir on the overflow is only on the outer acrylic as the glass is solid there (unlike on our BC) and such the water gets sucked up to the top and over the lip like the rest of the water.

I went with the clean look myself and did the herbie and have no regrets. The herbie is more fickle then bean and I will go that route on the next tank but honestly the herbie is silent so long as you have your ato firing.

All that said I also thought about cleaning the junk in the overflow which is why I did not glue my plumbing inside the overflow. I can pull the return or drain line to drain the overflow completly so I dont have to worry about getting a suction tube or such down there.

This is exactly why I will set mine up with the herbie style and not glue in the standpipes also.

Homer - Not sure if you are on facebook or not but if you are get on the SC group that steve mentions in his emails. Tons of tanks and questions get posted in there especially with sump and such that give great ideas.

And make sure you are a preferred reefer with BRS to get the 10% back in points as you will be ordering a bit from them. I would save yourself the hassle and order in new bulkheads as well as the economy gate valves. Order more then you need and return the rest. Better to pay $10 in shipping to return then to wait 3-5 days for parts you need to finish plumbing.

Are you going to keep the BC?

I think the biocube is going to end up being a replacement for the 20GFW tank, or might throw it up on CL, havent really decided yet.

I'm not on facebook(I loathe that site), and never will be!

Yes I'm a preferred reefer on BRS and have used my points quite well already(got my reactor for only 10$), so its only 4.99$ flat 2 days shipping.

Just want to add, the buying/trading forums on here are an awesome place to pickup decent used (sometimes BNIB) equipment at super discounted prices. Jst finally picked up my third BRS dosing pump that was only used for a month(user switched to a AIO dosing setup) for a measly 25$ shipped to my door.

Yeah I got my skimmer and ato for 1/5th of the price for my big tank.

I have to keep my eyes out for a really good price on a DOS (auto water change potentially) and a really good price on a quality calcium reactor...

My issue is that I want things now and am not always patient to wait or risk used equipment like when I got my T5 for the big tank and my Kessils. I could have saved a ton.

Yeah the only caveat, buyer beware. I have goten a couple things that were either not as described or broken. Most times I was able to send back to the seller for a refund, but I did get burned on a sicce return pump that was totally missing the inner housing. Seller has not been back on RC since he sold everything he had. Not a huge deal, but I was out 50$. Only good side, I now have a few spare parts for my new sicce pump.

If your willing to wait it out(took me almost 4 months to get 3 dosing pumps for under 100$), the deals are out there. Some stuff I'm just not willing to wait for, so buying new is the best option.

Says the guy who has been stocking equipment for 6 months for his current build....

Yea, we all have our lists... I'd like to get a PAR/quantum meter for cheap, and maybe even an apex if it came up for a steal. I need to sell some things too, like these ecoxotic panorama pro lights... Just have to get around to it.

Exciting times ahead Homer (and still soulpatch, since the tank isn't complete).

Hey now I have been stocking gear for 8 months at this point. I was stocking gear for a different build so some things I would have changed like a larger sump and probably different lighting to start with (I probably would have gone Cebu Sun or something had I not had the Kessils already though I could have sold them for only a slight loss it wasn't worth it...)

Even the doser was an impulse buy and if I had thought about it more I would have gone calcium reactor but we live and learn. I will probably go calc reactor anyway in next year and use my doser for AWC and whatever else I need to dose in my tank (no pox, elements, or whatever else.)

Homer is doing it right but getting the tank first and working from there.

With out a doubt I still have a ton of reading to do, plumbing, bulkheads, sumps, headloss, blah, blah. lol It can get very overwhelming at times.

Still very excited to get moving on this build. I feel like I'm moving in the right direction now that I've learned quite a bit with the biocube. A larger system with a sump is definitely the way to go as it affords you a lot more options. Don't get me wrong, I still love my biocube and would certainly recommend it to anyone getting into the hobby.

Thats why I have an all in one system and only upgraded the lights and kind of wish I had not of done that. They are to bright for my mushrooms.
Good luck with yours.

Wow......

Just got an email from steve over at SCA. He wants to give me an 80G PNP system for the same price as he quoted me for the 66. If the deal is still good in a couple weeks when I get my income tax refund, I'll be owning an 80G lol

Same footprint tank, just 4" deeper. 32x24x24. My thinking is with the deeper tank, I can mount the lights closer to reach the bottom, and in turn eliminating more light bleed as the lights will be closer to the water.

Hmmmm.... between 20" deep and 24" deep for a coral tank, I'd probably prefer a 20" deep tank, but it's unlikely to matter that much. Most "coral-able" lights will suffice for 24" if they sufficed for 20". It also gives you more water volume and swimming room.

It'll be like a stubby 120g :p

I'm excited to see how it goes. Good luck. Can't go wrong with either setup, and you're maximizing your space available, so all the better.

Stubby 110, but whatever. :D 80GDT, 30G sump.

I haven't heard back from him yet if he'll hold the deal for a couple weeks, but either way I'm excited to get going. Now if the damn tax man would hurry up and send my refund!
