Hooci's Blue Worm Infested Hand

Does anyone here know "Hooci"?

This is the guy that wrote the freaked out thread in the Reef Discussion forum about having blue worms infested in his hand from his tank. Ring any bells with any one here?

He says he is from Orlando so I thought it could be likely that he is an ORCA member.

The story doesnt seem very credible but I realize we dont all have the same writing abilities. I want to know if any of your members can confirm this persons plight. I stood up in the other thread and called him out on the truth of the story. A lot of what he said did not make sense and I did not like the idea of an unconfirmred and questionable story upsetting other RC members the way it has. I called it as I saw it to be, then I decided to at least try to get some confirmation from all of you.

I dont want to hurt some one who may already be in a crisis situation. At the same time I dont like to see peoples fears and compassions exploited. If I owe the man an apology it will be forthcoming. If this story remains unconfirmed then I think it should be debunked before it becomes another urban myth.

Can any of you help to bring some validity to the story of "Hooci"?

could be someone that needs some treatment by a professional and medication too. I work in the field and have heard some very odd beliefs that people believe are absolutely true.

this is definately possible. There are many things in the ocean that are undiscovered and something this small would definately be overseen in a lab. Dont get me wrong, as a student of biology I want proof and until I get it, I am going to say that it is a possibility.

It is also possible for this to be an infection from land. Maybe the bacteria/parasite, in an effort to get away from the saltwater, burrowed into his skin. Saltwater can cause an osmotic imbalance in smaller organisms causing it to either lyse or crenate.

He could also be the inventor of the full length gloves and just made a lot of money by fabricating a story. :D

On second thought, it could have been a very small bristle worm that ventured into an open wound. I would imagine that would be very painful.

if you have ever spent any time in a psych ward (not as a patient) this kind of story is not unusual. And honestly a lot of the morgallens symptoms are similar to hallucinations and delusional thinking that are symptoms of several mental illnesses. I am not saying that either this person or every person describing the morgallens stuff is, but there are similarities.

I doubt he's making it up. Although it sounds to me like it could very well be unrelated to something he would've contracted from his tanks.

and, yes, he's real. He bought a tank from me a couple months ago.

OK, good. Someone has met "Hooci." Thank you, "InLimbo87."

Is there any way he can be contacted to express everyones concerns? Did you swap phone numbers or email when selling him the tank? I am not asking for the number of someone who has not already given it to me. Would you be willing to make contact with him if possible? Maybe we could get a more sensible rendition of what has occured here. A few photos or a diagnosis would also be helpfull.

I also understand if you would rather not involve yourself, so dont feel imposed upon or pressured. Its fine to decline if you want to.

Anything is possiable, but im sure he got an infection some where else other than his tank.

And psych stories are all ways fun lol

Hopefully he just comes back on to talk more about it, because I don't want to contact him regarding this. My meeting with him was brief, and I wouldn't feel right calling him about his health issues.

mfp - I didnt even consider mental illness, but you are right. The more you look at this the more it looks like a mental issue, but I do not believe it is fair to jump to conclusions without meeting this guy. What is it that you do in your field?

Again, as a bio student and knowing that the ocean is the most difficult place to explore (especially something microscopic), you cant rule something like this out from happening.

Is it common, not at all. My hands are my tank all the time. I am also a bartender and have small cuts on my hands. I have never experienced anything personally, but have heard stories on here of falling very ill to various toxins in the water as well as bacteria.

Wow guys.
This guy comes on and tries to inform people of what has happened to him, and now he has been labeled crazy?
You guys are right, he needs to post pictures for everyone to see.But until he does you all are going to self diagnose him as crazy, or with a mental illness??? So who has the degree that has made this diagnosis?? Anyone?? I could care less if you are studying to get your degree. Until you have it, you cannot diagnose an illness for someone. That would be practicing without a licence. Right?
For future reference, if I have something unexplained happen to me, you guy's will be the last to know. After all, I don't want to be labeled crazy.
Not trying to start a fight here, but come on guys. What did this person do? Other than trying to warn you about something that happened to him.
And remember, just because YOU haven't heard of it doesn't mean it can't happen.
Flame me all you want. I'm real, and I will defend myself here.
Lighten up guys, and I don't know, maybe try and be part of the solution, not part of the bashing and diagnosing of this persons health.
Now that your mad at me, sit back and put your screen name in his place. Now how do you feel that you are looking for help, and have now been labeled crazy. And labeled that by people without degrees in that field. Also, if you state you have a degree, please post a picture of it. After all, everyone has jumped to conclusions because no pics were supplied.
HELP don't HURT.
Now flame away on me.

So you came here to start this bashing thread? And to upset the ORCA members?? Thanks.

I agree with HexedAgain on this one.

This has been taken way too far. He is a real person, and seems to have a real ailment.

hexed - if this is directed at me, I dont appreciate it. Reread my posts. I said it sounds like mental illness, but cant jump to conclusions without meeting the guy. So who is calling him crazy...not me.

I am a biology major and already defended him without taking anyones side as well as offer my advice and fact on the issue. The only thing I did is agree with a comment, but I remained open minded to the issue. I even slid a little bit of a joke in their.

Get off your high horse. I have seen you in here giving your 2 cents on marine bio stuff. Where is your degree in that?

BTW - Its only practicing if you are a professional in that field and receive money for your opinion. Without a degree and without money, what is it? An opinion.

I dont know if you woke up this morning and decided to be in a crappy mood and half read threads, but if you dont feel like reading the whole thing, dont post.

saltysupply - an ameoba is a very well known eukaryote that is able to live outside its natural environment and cause even death in humans.

sounds kinda odd to me, a saltwater parasite that attacks humans and can live outside its environment.

Have a look at this. Wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Parasite fish

Woke up in a great mood this morning,I am still in a great mood now, and for what it's worth, my high horse must be at the glue factory, because I can't see him.
This was not directed at you.You must have just taken it that way.
DID YOU READ SOMEWHERE IN MY POST THAT I WAS CALLING YOU OUT????????? Unlike you calling me out in your post.
You appear to have only half read MY post, so until YOU read all of it, please don't post about me. I to take offense to being called out. Please understand that you are not the only one.
And no worries of me asking or me trying to provide help to anyone here, remember I don't have a degree in Marine Biology so I should just keep my mouth shut if someone needs help. flasher1 just remember your statement when you try and diagnose someones problem. Be it reef related or mental stability.
By the way, my self imposed marine bio stuff degree is from my experiences with MY TANKS, and nothing else. Also, please show me the links where I acted like I had a degree in marine biology, please.
