hooking apex to network today?

My computer with wireless modem (D-Link) is upstairs. So today I am going to
plug my Apex to modem to hook it to network.
My tank is downstairs.
My question is that once I get Apex communicating to network, can I program apex and perform updates with my laptop (usb from laptop to Apex)which is also on house network downstairs, or do I have to have to plug Apex to usb to modem upstairs.
I am not very computer savvy, and alittle intimitated about setting up Apex, so this question my be silly.

Not only can you update the apex by directly hooking it up to your laptop, you'll have to! It cannot be updated over a wireless network (where the Apex is communicating wirelessly with the network). The programming you can do from your computer upstairs through the Apex's web page.

you cannot connect the apex to the computer via USB! you will burn it up!

You connect directly via a cat 5 cable to the network port. There are instruction for this in the unnoficial users guide!

Yes i will be sure to use a CAT 5 Cable. I just did't know if I had to unplug Apex and take it upstairs to update.
