Hoping

WOW that must be one heavy tank!! I'd offer to help but I have trouble with a 75! If there's anything we can do (besides carry the tank) let us know and we'll be there!!

If if takes ten people to move it and you aren't moving it to a permanent location, it sounds like more trouble than its worth. On top of that you need a UHAul to transport it...I would pass if I were you.

In the overall scheme of things the tank is always the least of the cost...

Where is this tank anyway?

Its hard to call anything free a bad deal.

I'm not sure how replaceable a seal is so I broke it down with a new pump
Granted its all new but here what it breaks down like (all prices taken from Saltycritter.com)
Skimmer ASM G-3 $260
Sedra 20000 internal pump $100
Heaters (2-250 watt) $40
$400 plus lights.

72" VHO 2 bulb retro's are $223 and you would want at least 2 if you went just VHO, or add another $300 for 2 175 MH retro's.

$in the neighborhood of $800 before live rock. And thats for an LPS tank. For SPS you would want the 250w MH and add a thirt retro.

The advantage is you can buy as you want, the disadvantage is it will cost more.

There is no way 10 people are needed to mave a tank under 180 gals. 4 People moved my 180 and the glass is 5/8" thick. Dry weight is 500lbs. Also a full size pickup or two would be more than sufficiant. I just moved a 6' long 125 tank and stand in a minivan. The stairs would create the biggest problem and if you got an appliance dolly that would make that easier also.

Now $150 for a return pump that needs work is a little on the steep side. With standard 1" durso overflows, you would have a hard time getting over 800 gph through the sump. You can get new pumps for close to that price.

That's what I thought too (about the weight). 3 of us moved a 125 glass tank, me included so I don't really think I was a big help, but I swear that the guy told me that 10 maintenance staff had a hard time moving it. It has to be a heavier glass than normal.....

As for the pumps and stuff, I am willing to slowly buy things. No rush there

Exactly how old is this tank? If its too old, It may need some resealing work. That alone wouldnt be worth it.

Find the original post by the seller. If you look at the top of the post, there is a little link that says "PM". Click on that and it will send a PM to them.

Ok, so the pickup of the tank is still on for tomorrow. If there is anyone that would like to help, let me know. I am heading up there around 11:00am. The guy wants it out of the school, cause it's getting stinky. So I either do this tomorrow or never.

I have two guys and a full pickup. Any other takers? The guy said that the stairs are the real issue and that's where the manpower is necessary. I am renting a storage unit off of Platte, so there aren't anymore stairs after we're done with the school.

Give me a call if you're interested.

Thanks, Keri 860-202-4857

crap I would go, but I have to work for a couple hours tomorrow (which is rare for a sunday) but I'll be done by around 2.
If for some reason you go later let me know.
I am leary of a free tank, I'd think its scratched, or like russ said old silicone. But hey, its free and you might as well drive up and check it out if nothing else.
You can always decline if its really bad.
I'll keep checking the thread, keep us updated on the plan.

Yes I got the tank. It is huge and Malcolm was correct, the stairs were a bit*h. After all of my begging for help, I just asked too late and no one was available. Jeremy (my fiance), a friend, and I went up there. Malcolm was great though. He got about 8 of his high school buddies to help out and haul it OUT.

The only VERY shocking thing was the extreme smell of death that entered my nose the moment I stepped foot in the school, no maybe that was when I entered the town of Lafayette.... It was absolutely overwhelming. The closer we got to the library, the more it smelled like a mass murder happened weeks ago... LOL It was the worst smell that I have ever encountered. I am sure that the shop-vac that they used to suck the rest of the death sand out was totally trashed. I have to tell you that I am laughing my a$$ off as I type this. It was horrible. GAG GAG literally I almost threw up a few times.

So now for the cool part. The tank is huge and in great shape. There is some residual coraline algae on the glass. It could use a new stand, but is manageable. I am going to strip it and refinish it. The canopy was caput, so we will build another. The sump (isn't really a sump, but a show 60 gallon acrylic tank) is awesome. It is actually something I would consider using as a tank rather than just a refugium. It has a great stand and canopy and was used as a show refugium.

I felt terrible that the poor kids had to break the tank down. There was a sponsor that originally funded them for everything and they were doing fund raisers to keep it up. They ran out of money though when this crash happened and had to give it away. Boo for them, but yay for me. They had this amazing collage/poster of how the tank looked when stocked and it was very very nice. Too bad that they lost all livestock, but a clam....

Anyway, we rented a storage unit until our move and it was heavy, but three of us can totally manage without stairs. We stopped at the car wash and power sprayed both the tank and refugium out to get rid of the smell. LOL I drove behind them the whole way back and could smell the death in my car on the highway!!!

YAY I have a 150 gallon tank!!!

Yeah for you Keri2000!!! Congratulations on your new tank!

If you ever find yourself missing that smell ...... just come on over to my basement where I am curing all of the rock that Malcolm gave me. I get the smell of death in my house for the next two weeks .... but even though I have to cure all the dying rock , and kill all the aiptasia , go through two buckets of salt in saltwater changes, I am still VERY grateful to Malcolm.

Can't wait to see your tank set up (once you move etc....) Please keep us posted and again....

Congratulations!!!!!!!
