tank is clear and nice color on rock and small corals, but everything is washed blue and looks crappy.

I usually use the auto setting and turn the flash off. I tried using manual focus but no help. I dont tinker a lot with other settings but could really use some ideas to take better pics.

Thanks

Looks like you need to adjust your white balance. Point the camera at the tank and set it that way. That should make the colors appear much more natural, depending on the camera. My camera unfortunately can not properly white balance to actinic lighting (Sony DSC H2), so I can only shoot photos with the MH on. I borrowed a friend's Nikon D70 and it white balanced correctly, so I think the D50 should be able to as well.

My D50 adjusts just fine for white balance and I run 20k xms and actinics...

Also....a tripod is your friend!
always shoot straight through the glass and not at an angle.

Good luck

if you shoot in raw and use photoshop white balance is less of a problem and can be taken care of in post processing. try setting your white balance to cloudy or flourecent, that usually helps. Also use a tripod as mentioned above. And practice. Below are a couple of pics i have taken with my D50, remember that for most fish pictures i need to take 50 to get the one good one.
