horrible vortec noise

At first I thought it was broken. Then I look around and see all sorts of things about people complaining about how loud they all pretty much are. The purpose of this thread was to ascertain wether there is something wrong or if they all are annoyingly loud. If this is abnormal I will send it back and get my money back. If any pump I buy sounds like this I will buy new bearings. So please chime in anyone who can help me solve this issue.

If the noise is a whirring sound that mostly (but never completely) goes away when you turn down the flow to around 1/3 or below, then it's just the normal whirring of the mp10's motor. I kept mine for the battery backup, but ended up running them at the lowest setting because my wife complained about the noise, and got controllable Koralia's (Pro series) for flow within the tank.

bfin3- I don't think you specified, but did you buy the VorTech new or used? While the external motor does create a small amount of noise (typically drowned out by other equipment), what you've described sounds like perhaps something could be wrong. Before going to the extent of purchasing third-party parts and trying to "fix" it yourself, I would recommend contacting our service department @ 1-800-785-0338 ext. 2, they'd be happy to help you troubleshoot.

Hey ecotech. I bought it used which is why I did not contact ecotech in the first place. Wish we could put sounds clips on here so I could demonstrate the noise. It does make a whirring noise but it's kind of whiney and sounds like something is probably not right. It sounds like a remote control car. I believe that I have it aligned properly. It also seems to get warm a little more quickly than I would expect that it should. I'll talk to your guys and if it doesn't work I will return it to the previous owner and buy a new one and wish I wouldn't have wasted time buying used.

If it sounds like a remote control car when running at max, that sounds about right. If it's almost silent when running at minimum, that also sounds about right. They do get warm (especially at max) but not hot.

(BTW - I have three, they each have slightly different sounds from each other, but they're similar.)

I took apart the wet side and it looks like the plastic encasing the shaft is cracked so seller is sending me a new one. Hopefully that will solve my issues.

I just went ahead and sent it back to the seller and bought a brand new one manufacture date of Dec 18, 2013. It sounds significantly better, not silent but certainly tolerable. There is definitely something to be said for buying new with these pumps or anything else.
