horrible vortec noise

Just bought a used mp10 and it pushes water but sounds awful. Is this part of the pump or is this an issue. I've been reading and sounds like I should replace the bearings? I can't live with it. The rest of my tank is whisper quiet and this thing is droning on loudly.

My MP40s make a very slight whirring noise when they spin up past 75% and one is about 2' from my head when I'm on the couch watching TV. Anything more than a slight whir and I'd think the wet side may need to be serviced.

If they aren't aligned perfectly, they make a rattling noise. My only complaint about Vortechs is that it takes me 2-3 days to get them dialed in with no rattling after I clean the wet sides.

Diassemble the wet side, clean it, and put it back together. Sometimes parts of it spin that aren't supposed to. There are youtube instructions on how to.

I had what sounds like a similar problem. Check the pin spacer to make sure that none of the "inserts" are bent. If any if them is, all you need to do is order a new spacer.

It's been a while since I pulled of my MP10, but don't think there is a pin spacer, just rubber discs of differing thicknesses. If the sound is a rattling, then wet side adjustment or cleaning may be required; if it is motor noise, then either turn down the unit or you may have a bearings problem.

Bearings

You can get bearings on amazon for $20.
Youtube has some good videos. it really is
easy to do.

The ceramic bearings cost quite a bit more but they're supposed to be worth it due to their longevity. I don't have first hand knowledge, however. I replaced mine with the standard bearings.

it's pretty lame that people are paying top dollar for a substandard product I'm very disappointed that I have to go through this garbage.

You bought a used piece of eqpt and you have on idea how it was abused or dropped. I would return it to the seller.

Knowing now what I know about vortechs, I would never buy a used one. You have to treat them like porcelain and hope that the previous owner did the same.

Treat like porcelain? Not really. Properly maintaining them and not dropping them sure. My used mp10's are quiet other than when i run the in Nutrient Export mode at 80% plus. If the noise is dry side, I would send them in for repair. If it is wet side, you can fix things yourself. Then it is a mother of proper alignment.

The thing seems to be working as far as pushing water and the casing seems to be intact and not have signs of damage so I'll probably try to switch out the bearings.

Vortech pumps are certainly not substandard, but caveat emptor when you buy second hand. You have no way of knowing how something has been treated nor how old it is. I'm amazed, frankly, how much people seem willing to spend for these pumps used. Ok, if one is NIB, fine, but I'd never pay more than 50% of retail for any mechanical device more than a few months old.

If whomever you bought this pump from misrepresented its condition, then take it up with them. If they did, or you failed to ask, then the person at fault is the one you see in the mirror every morning.

I agree.

You can't send the dry side in for repair. Ecotech says the dry sides
are not serviceable. I bought 2 off of R/C, no problems. For $50 you
can rebuild the whole thing. So you do it every 2 years, that's
$25 a year and you can do it many times.

That statement is just wrong. I had the same problem as the OP and Ecotech took care of it. If it's not serviceable how did you rebuild yours?

To the OP just call Eco. They will take care of you.

Echotech told me there are no serviceable parts in the dry side. They didn't
repair yours, you got a new one and you should of if it was under warranty.
