Although some SS cheapo ones may rust the ones I got from HD and have been using for the last five years have not rusted at all and they have been splashed well.Originally posted by SSalty
Would stainless steel clamps work?
Also, would it be alright to just cover the hose clamps with some electrical tape to prevent rust?

Some stainless worm drive clamps are made with SS301 and zinc plated screw, others SS301 with SS 305 screws but the right ones are made with SS316 clamp and screw. Those 316 ones are the ones to use.
In any case although 316 might be OK to use under water I would not recommend it.
I get my plastic clamps from www.mcmaster.com the ones I find the most practical and strong are the double snap grip. Look at page 244 Nylon Snap-Grip Hose and Tube Clamps.
I do not think iron rust will do nay harm, it is the alloy metals that will. (zinc, copper etc.)Originally posted by SSalty
Just curious, what harm would it do to the tank if just a little rust got into the water?
