Hose possibly too long for overflow-sump?

We got an all glass megaflow sump today, and the flex hose that came with it, the one that attachs to the overflow drain into the sump is too long. Or is supposed to be long and made to loop around to attach to the sump? We've got a loop in it now, and the water draining into the sump gurgles really bad at times. Seems to me that water would have a hard time running uphill, (through this loop) and is causing the gurgle, burping, flushing sounds. The water in the overflow box will rise almost to the top of the standpipe, then like it's being flushed, it falls back down. I've got a mag 9.5 pump, and I have it cut down to almost halfway. My question is, is the hose supposed to be long and made to loop around? Or, do you cut it to fit more in a straight line?

I'm gonna tag along.I also have a 90 with the exact same problem.I left it the length I got it.I thought it was normal. When you made it straight did it fix the gurgling problem?

I had a proclear model 60 wet/dry and it does the same thing. When I replaced the wet/dry with a fuge I kept the hose. It still did the same thing, gurgling and everything. I just snaked it around so there is no loop or a trap of any sort and the gurgle is gone. But I would cut it if you can't snake it so there is no loop.

Well, I've left it the same length for now. But I did try cutting a piece of hose I had left over. It seemed to work ok, but it wanted to leak on the end I had cut. I told my lfs about it and they said they're supposed to be long, and it was supposed to have loops in it. Soooo, I came home and put the hose on that came with it. I'm not able to ask the lfs today, they're not open. It's still gurgling this morning. I may end up trying to snake it around and see if I can get the loops/traps out of it. If not, then I may go back to the cut piece.

Any other suggestions?

Tagging along too,,,I have same problem and was told to definitely get a shorter hose, which would reduce the noise
But....can't find a hose that is less than 3 feet so far.....

We can't find a shorter hose either. Well, not like the flex hose that came with it. We've checked home depot and tried a couple pieces of their hoses, but they were too thick and would kink in the tight curves going either to the connection on the sump or on the standpipe.

Here in albuquerque you can find the hose at pong supply stores and the like. I dont think Ive ever seen it a Home Depot or Lowes.

But you definitively need either a shorter piece or at the very least get rid of the loops and traps.

I had the hose on when i first started and you dont want it to make a loop you want to just snake it around so it is a one doward motion with turns. If you have it doing loops that is going to cause turbulance which will cause gurgling noise. Just my 2 cents.

I've tried to get a pic of it but I can't seem to master how to post a pic in the forums. I spent some time yesterday trying to snake the hose around to where there's no loops/traps and with the help of "I hooks" and plastic zip ties to hold it in place I've got it without any loops but there's still a place or two that has a slight uphill grade to it and still not letting the overflow drain like it should. I also tried putting the cut piece of hose back on but it still has a slow leak on the end that is cut. A two foot hose might work much better if I could find it here locally but everyone says that the hose I have is the shortest it comes in, and it's about three or four feet long. Any more suggestions? Ideas?

You could try moving your overflow box 1 foot away from your drain into your sump. That way you are using more of the hose before it actually gets to your sump.

Oops. Sorry 'bout that, but I forgot to mention that this is on a drilled tank. Guess I need to update my profile information. We first started out with a 75 gallon, and like clockwork, we had to get another tank, bigger tank, better tank,.....well, y'all know how it goes. lol And yes, it hit us when we had the freshwater tanks too. lol Anyway, we're having the trouble with the hose on the 90 gallon, drilled, reef ready tank, so we can't really move the overflow box.

You could alway use solid PVC. You could also get some vinyl tubing and hose clamps. On that note you could use a hose clamp on the hose that you cut to try and keep it from leaking.

Why can't you just cut it? It doesn't have to attach to the sump the way it was designed (I don't know if it does in fact connect to anything). As long as you can get the end of the hose slightly underwater.
