I'm in the process of setting up a 210 G in wall reef tank. I have an opportunity to buy a smaller (but operational) reef tank. I was thinking that I could set the smaller tank up for now while I work on hte larger one and then move things to the larger tank once it was up and running. I would like help determining what equipment- if any would be "usable" on my larger tank. Here is what I would be buying:

90 gallon reef ready tank. (10 mm thick with starfire front) 27 gallon sump (months old) with a Berlin skimmer and a uv sterilizer. The main pump for the tank is submersible or external and flow rate is 800 gph. (gallons per hour)For power heads fluval 402 (350gph), fluval 8o2 (450 gph), 1 fluval 304 , 2 maxjet 1200 (550 gph). Aqua Light Pro (paid $ 945 new 8 months ago) (2 150 watt HOI -10k bulbs)
(96 watt actinic 2 feet) ( 3 1 watt lunar moon light)

130 pounds of live Fiji rock. Pink Bubble Coral large , 30 assorted ornamental mushrooms ( not ugly mushrooms), torch coral, galaxy coral, pink hammer coral medium , larghe anoeme,6 inch pink brain, 3 inch green brain, 3 inch green plate coral, medium plate coral , Tan toodstool polyp.

So, this tank is already set up, or not?

If I were in your position, I would hold off on the smaller tank. A lot of it would do with the fact that I wouldn't want to go through of the work of setting it up, then have to tear it back down, and on the other hand I would want to have to relocated the livestock more than is necessary.

Yes this tank is set up in a town about two hours from me. The equipment etc is all verily new so I'd like to incorporate as much as I can to my new set up as I go. I thought I could use the live rock/ pumps etc. and then sell the tank/ lights once I'm running 100% in the 210 G???

most of the stuff your not going to want for a larger tank like a 210. Most of the filter, powerheads, and lighting isn't going to cut it in a larger tank.

I agree about the equipment not being compatable, But if the price is right then it would be worth it to get all the livestock and sell of the other equipment when you finish the 210.

I think the price is pretty good. At worst I could run this as a second show tank...my wife will love this, tanks all over the house!

Besides all that I can enjoy a tank until the other is running. Might help curb the urge to rush the process????

You could definately use the 90 gallon as a show tank or even a propogation/quarantine tank.

That 90 would hold you off until you got your 200+ gallon and also you could frag stuff in there and make some money off of it.

One good thing is that when you are setting up the new tank you can seed it with water from the older one. add like 10G a week or so to help establish the newer tank...Plus you'd get all the livestock! If you have the $$...GO FOR IT!!!

I figure for what it will save me in live rock it's probably worth it- I'll see if he'll deliver/ setup for me as well!

If you have the extra cash, I'd say go for it! I certainly would. And after you have the bigger tank up and running, you may want the 90 gallon for a QT tank. If I had the money and the room in my house, I'd have lots of tanks!:)

you'll end up spending a ton of money on the smaller system, which will just delay your big project.

trust me. i know from experience.

:D
