Hot Days are upon us

My temp is 85.5 even with the fan running to cool off.
Not much help on lowering temp when the outsise temp is 85/90
Is it time to invest in a chiller????????

I think we get too excited about the temperature. I have mostly LPS and some SPS, and a few softies. My summer temps get to 86 deg on a regular basis. Rarely higher but it has hit 88. I will invert the light cycle so that the light isn't on in the hottest parts of the day and that seems to help reduce the peaks.

I've been up and running for 5 years.

A good idea is to freeze a few 20oz. bottles to save for a power outage or for the super hot days - they can be placed in the sump and keep the heat in check for awhile.

I do like the thought of altering the lighting schedule so that it's not on during the hottest time of the day.

I would also suggest to make sure you are properly disturbing the water surface with a PH to ensure proper gas exchange and cooling.

Honestly, I think exposure to higher temps is more of a concern than lower temps. I would go with floating frozen bottles. If you don't plan to run AC this summer, I would consider a chiller in the long run. However, a window unit might be better so at least you can enjoy the benefits of a cooler room.

There are several people in the DIY forums that have built cooling towers that use spray nozzles inside of a tube and air moving up past the misted air. It utilizes the evaporative cooling methods and will really cool a tank but you will end up with more humidity in the house and LOTS more top off needed.

Might be worth a shot if you are hitting 86 degrees and it could be fixed by installing an ATO and a cooling tower.

I just kicked on the A/C last week and my temps were up to 83.2. Now they are hovering between 78 and 79 with the house at 78 degrees and ceiling fans on. I just hate to see that electric bill with the A/C going :( but I don't think I will ever live in a house without central air again. I guess I am spoiled now.

Found the info that I was trying to post before. This might be a neat project if you are a DIY'er.

My tanks got up to 90 and I had to break down and turn on the AC, I froze some water and will be keeping it in the freezer all summer now

Jeff, do you get salt creep from the blowing waves at the end of your sump? I was thinking about getting something a bit stronger than the little clip-on fan that I have now but don't want noise and creep.

Also, next time you are near the fan can you check the wattage and let me know? I will compare it with the battery of little fans I was going to introduce to my system.

Thanks,

When it runs the creep isn't too bad as the waves sort of ripple rather than slosh. I can throw it on the kill-o-watt tonight to see what it draws on the highest setting.

Kevin, it looks like it runs about 70w on the highest setting and 55w on the lowest. Considering it pushes 2180CFM on the highest setting, it only kicks on for a fraction of the time.

Even with a chiller and air it seems like one or the other is running. The lights heat the tank up when the temp is in the 70's and the chiller is on. When it gets hotter and I put the air on the electric bill is going up then. You can't win in the summer. I am with Kevin I don't think I could live with air anymore those days of living in front of a fan are over.

I think you meant "I don't think I could live withOUT air anymore"

:D

I know a guy who has a window air unit and his PH drops way low in the summer from CO2 buildup in the room. If he opens a window for an hour it comes back up. We are talking about PH around 7.8 :(
I guess each has its own problems but it seems that with central air it affects the PH less than a window unit.

I noticed a .3 drop in pH when my central air came on. W/o AC its 8.13 and with its 7.83. Funny thing is it stayed above 8 all winter.

Hi all,

I have a 9800 BTU Whirlpool air conditoner with remote for sale for $85.00. It's two years old and has only been used around five times. Works great, send me a PM if intertested. Great for colling just the fish room or any other room. I don't need it now that my shop is air conditioned.

I just started a frag tank in my basement, and it's really cool because I don' have to worry about AC down there. Granted, you guys really can't "move" your tanks, it works if you find a place that is always cool.

I also have a 24 gallon nano in my bedroom and that thing can get pretty hot. I actually stuck a whole lot of ice cubes in a bag and tossed it in the back once to cool the thing off. I run my ceiling fan on high when it gets really hot though, and it usually keeps things around 82*

My ph has been at 8.2, lately it is at 7.8.
Stable but low, is that real bad?

Stable is what you want. You will be fine with 7.8. You can top off with kalk water to help bring the PH up a little if you feel you need to.
