Hot to stop jumpers?

So Today I lost one of my Clown Fish...

I have egg crate over 90% of the top but he found a spot that wasn't covered I guess...

I notice a lot of people dont have anything over the top, how do you prevent jumpers?

PS. I had 2 Clownfish, can I replace the one I lost with another clown and can it be a different breed?

no....if its a different breed they are likely to kill eachother...and if you add another one of the same breed and they are both female...then they will kill eachother...i have made the mistake of doing both of these things...both left me heartbroken and down like 40 bucks maybe more

Clowns don't really have a sex when they are young they will change sex from male to female but can not change from female to male. So if you add a smaller clown that is not yet sexually mature usually 12-24 months that clown will become what the the current one is not. So yes you can add a clown of the same type and get away with it but you would run the risk of them hurting each other if you introduce a larger female then the female you already have. The clown you have will probibly have already changed to a female even if it was the male because it is now the largest clown in the enviroment.

I lost my first perc to jumping. The cat led me to the tank and the fish was still sticky. I've also lost several firefish to jumping, the most recent one made it through a very very small crack in the cover of my tank. IMO, when things jump out, it is because they are getting chased. Any meanies in the tank?

BTW I have never had a fish jump out of a tank unless something else was really wrong with the water or someone was really harrasing them. I run all of my tanks with no covers at all.

What kind of clown???? and which one is left - male or female- and is it still young....it does make a difference. I had 2 B & W oscellaris clowns....one jumped-I thought it was the male.....I got another one from pufferpunk - hers was the female. Anyway, short story - they are now sharing an anemone - true love at first sight. Ya just gotta luck out-someone out there just might have a mate for yours. Good luck p.s. I've got a cinnamon clown (sex undetermined) and a true perc - I think female since its kind of aggressive.

i have replaced my male 2 times
i know my survivor is a female because she is HUGE if yours clown is big then get the smallest other one u can find
i mean tiny
i never had a proble they fight for a few days then are fine

I would also recommend getting a smaller clown. If your IS a male it will become the female if you add a smaller clown. If its a female and you add a smaller clown, you will likely still see some aggression, but thats just to show dominance over the new male/juvie. If you try to add a larger clown that is a female, and you dont do it before youre (?) male (?) starts to turn, it will likely cause issues and possibly another jumper.

Clowns arent normally jumpers unless there is aggression from the female trying to show her dominance. Usually it doesnt get bad enough to cause jumping unless there is no other place to retreat to, but it does happen occasionally.

I've not had a problem w/ jumpers and I've got 2 false percs, and a fairy wrasse among others.. but the fairy wrasses I have heard are known to jump.. I've not had that issue.. The fairy wrasse runs the show in the tank so he isnt chased by anyone. I run my tank totally open top..

One of my clowns got into my fuge one time when I firsted added them.. other then that no problems.. **Knock on wood**

I'm planning on buying a decent light fixture soon and I think I might be forced to get rid of the egg crate...

I mean if you have PC or halides will the egg crate effect the lights?

Funny you should ask that... Check out this article in this month's Reefkeeping magazine. He did some experiments with egg crate -- it's about 3/4th of the way down the page.

I'm going to use some sort of netting stretched over my new tank, and see how that goes.

I've never had a fish jump. I guess some times even in non hostile environments, they will jump. I have a few fish in a large 125 that have been together for awhile and get along.

I had a 6-line for 3 or 4 years that never jumped that I ever saw, until one day he ended up in my sump stuck to the intake of the return pump. Sucker jumped into the corner overflow and then got sucked up by the durso, and had a fun trip down to the sump where he met his demise. Personally, I'll take precautions and make jumping tough if not impossible.

my tank cover all the time since i have some wrasses and they are jmper with the full cover on the top my Scott's Fairy Wrasse jump and he fall into my overflow box .i didn't find him and thought maybe he die but after a week i hear a jump from the side of the tank and all my fish was at the other side then i realise that the fish is there. here is the picture i took him out friday and put him back into the tank
