Hot Water!

Having trouble keeping water in my tank cool enough. I have 29 gal biocube and the temp wants to stay at or above 80 degrees. I could use some ideas on how to lower it because the lights bring the temp up.

So I am only running them a few hours a day. Changed water out yesterday but the lights made the temp rise yesterday. My AC in house not working to good.

Need some ideas???

it will provide evaporative cooling. works wonders. you can use a clip on fan as mentioned above or make up a more permanent solution with computer fans.

Float bags of ice cubes to bring the temp down if it starts to get too hot. I know my tank runs around 80 anyway, so I am not sure what crazy hot is to you, but when in doubt float bags of ice.

is 80 degrees ok? i bought a chiller because my tank got up to 80. i would say chiller but they are expensive. you will be suprised how much cooler your tank will run with just a couple of fans

I am sure Bill or someone else will smack me for saying yes, but that is how I run my tank. I let it get a little cooler in the winter and around 79-80 in the summer. I pretty much stick to the season tables that Neptune has. I know the majority of the population keep theirs around 76-77 though. All of my current corals have full polyp extension and are happy as a clam (no pun intended), so I do not think that they mind the slightly warmer waters. Granted I do run a fan over my sump and have replace about 5 gallons every two days, so I have no clue what it would be if I did not have an 8" fan in there.

Nah, But the added heat is not conducive to good health in Coral or fish. Cooler temps seem to fend off disease and keep organisms from using excess energy fighting the heat.
Many people let their temps go into the 80's and I've heard of 84 degrees from one reef keeper with no issues. I guess it's all a matter of preference in the end.
But IMHO 76-78 is Ideal for all year around temps, And my tanks have been able to stay @those temps with just fans no chillers here $$$$ Kaching

My 75 would get to 82 daily and recover to 80 at night. saw 84 a time or two. im keeping the new tank set to 77.4. chiller on at 78.2, off at 77.0

Fans will go a long way toward cooling your tank. Just expect to add more topoff water. In my opinion 84 is the top. If it gets any warmer than that I'd do something different. I have been able to keep my tanks cooler by advancing the light cycle so they come on earlier and go off earlier. That way they are not on in the hottest part of the evening. My temp does not get above 82.6 now and it has not caused any problems.

I prefer somewhere between 78 - 82 and I believe that where most tanks are kept. Fans aimed at the top of the water work great as has been mentioned.
