how can you tell if clowns are paired?

I recently purchased two black and white perculas in hope that they would pair up and mate. Does anyone know how to tell if they have paired?

They don't kill each other!!!

But seriously in a mated pair, one will shiver as a sign of submission (male) to the female. I have seen it happen at the pair at "O" st before and believe it is common to all the breeds of clown.

That they can live and share the same anenome is another sign..ie one dosen't constantly chase the other away. Typically non mated clowns do not share a single anenome.

I'd agree most with the not killing each other. Them swimming close in proximity/next to each other without any bickering is a good sign that they're paired. Hosting the same anemone or LPS is a good sign as well :)

Where'd you get the two black/white percs? It's hard to find them paired.

Listen carefully after the lights go out. You can hear the little one humming Barry White tunes.
:D

I have a rose/green hybrid buble tip anemone in there but neither of them go in there. The bigger one is more dominant but they swim together frequently. However the bigger one will express her dominance once in a while with a quick chase. I got the two at a Petco in Sunnyvale.

If anyone is trying to pair clowns I would suggest that they get 2 small/juvinile clowns. One of them will establish dominance and turn female while the other will turn male.

As for sexing them.......The male will be the one running away, possibly jumping in your filter to get away from his girlfriend. The female will be the one that attacks your hand when you are doing work in the tank, while the male hides. Really the male will be forced to hide and sometimes chased into a corner by his lady.

My female frequently bullys the male and he shows submission by doing what looks like a shiver or flinch. Its the kind of reaction someone might have when they are about to get hit or beat up. He cowers and shivers next to her or below her.

Ya know the way men flinch when their gal asks "Does my butt looks big in this"? ....

look for a similar reaction in one of your clowns.

Time to update your location in your RC profile TotalKhaos!

The female definately rules the roost and will show aggressive behavior toward everyone around her. :)

From what everyone is saying I think they have paired up. Hopefully they'll have some babies soon.

My understanding is that the only way that you can tell for sure is that they produce a clutch of eggs. I have a GSM pair and they create a clutch about every 18 days. I think once the pair is mature they should start laying on a fairly regular schedule. Luckily the GSM's unlike the regular white striped maroons don't seem as aggressive. I also have a single Maroon female that is a holy terror.

Would the clutch of eggs disappear quickly in a tank with other fish?

Asked another way - would other fish eat them?

I have a pair that are very docile with one another but have never found a clutch of eggs.

When My GSM's spawn the male guards and fans the eggs. The female guards the area. None of the other fish in my tank bother the eggs until they hatch, then everyone, including the parents have a feast. Of course even through my GSM's are not as aggressive as my white stripe maroon, they do defend their territory.
