How do duncans propagate?

I have had a branching duncan for 2 years. It has had its ups and downs but since I bought my LED lights about a year ago it has grown like crazy.

Yesterday a small healthy looking head with a small amount of branch just fell off in the sand. I picked it up and put it in a small hole in my rock work. It seems to be opening.

Is this a normal propagation method for duncans?

I have heard of other corals such as kenya trees dropping branches. As long as it is healthy I would say it is fine. Keep an eye on it but I think the guy probably just did you a favor. I have seen youtube videos of guys almost cutting off fingers trying to frag duncans with a dremel. Dremel + slimy coral = -1 finger

Here is the "parent" duncan.
