How do I clean my sand substrate?

How do I clean this area? It's under the top layer of sand.

You can either leave it alone of run a scraper along the glass if you want it to look clean.

i hate how that looks...nice clean sand bed, crystal clear water, then that nasty mess under the sand bed! i keep the front of my sand bed "pushed back" so that i don't have to look at that build up. i don't care about it in the back or on the sides but i don't wanna see it on the front.
