how do i fix this?

For some reason I decided to use tap water for a water change, and now that has lead to a massive cyano and brown algae outbreak.

What can I do to counteract this??? I was thinking about running a poly filter, but nowhere around here has them (checking 1 more LFS tomorrow), and I don't want to order one online when there is/could be a better fix.

Thanks,

Stew

Do another water change with RO/DI water, siphon as much cyano as you can, then wait it out.

That's what I would do.

I would do a 5+gl water change with RO/DI water every other day for a week or so. You should notice a nice change in about 2 weeks. Good luck!

use some chemi pure then do water changes.. you will be fine..also get a phosphate test kit.

ok, so Im going to get a polyfilter and some chemipure and use it with the carbon Im already using. Do as many 5g water changes as I can in the next 2 weeks, and siphon out as much of the cyano as I can. Anything else I need to do?

no no no... do it like this

chemi pure first

then water changes and then add carbon and a polyfilter. get a phosphate test kit and test your phosphates as well.

dont do all at the same time

Keep in mind that even if you get a phosphate test, you might not get a reading. The algae that grows is very efficient at using it. Still, a great test to have and use. :)

so how long should I run the chemipure? It says in the directions that it should last for 3-4 months before changing it?
