How do I frag this thing? (pic)

I have a huge leather and I want to make it a hell of a lot smaller,

Can I do a simple cut and glue method or is there a special procedure?

How many frags can I make with this one...? it's about 11" at its widest

Wow!! That thing is HUGE!!! I think that you can cut it up with SHARP sterile stainless steel scissors and let the frags attach to rock rubble. Others will let us know if I am wrong tho.

Grab a razor blade and start cutting pieces off. Rubberband the pieces to rubble.

I've cut it like a pizza pie. I start by cutting at the base where the "head" meets the stalk. The stalk will regrow another head. I then cut down the middle of the "pie" and make a bunch of triangular pieces. Let them sit near or tie them down to some rubble rock and after a few days to weeks, they'll attach and grow another stalk. Just make sure the new frags get good flow (not powerful) so they don't get a bacteria infection or starting fouling. They also release some chems so you may also want to drop a new bag of GAC in the sump to absorb some of it.

Good advice you've gotten. Question for you? I have a huge leather like yours. Mine is like your one on the left - flat. Do you know why your leather on the right "cups" like that and the one on your left is so flat?

You can use a razor to slice a ring off around the edge and then cut the ring into sections and rubber band them (not too tight) to a piece of rubble. Super glue won't work well. With good flow both frags and mother should heal.

Then look in www.youtube.com for videos od coral fraggin. Then get ready to trade. Oh and this leather was cut from my brothers and glued to a plug,all he did was trim off a 1 inch piece and now.

Just make sure and run extra carbon when you Frag- Soft Corals release lots of nasty stuff when there sliced open.. May harm other corals

Plus I still have the one in the background to get rid of also.

Dumb question, do I take the rubber band off when it attaches to the rock/plug?

You can do larger than 1" by all means. 1" is the norm for people who sell/trade frags.

Leathers aren't the most popular unfortunately. But you're looking more into creating space in the tank, not making $$$. As long as you offer a fair price, you'd be surprised how many of those frags you can get rid of.


You can also donate a couple to the Reef Club if you have spares. We raffle off all kinds of stuff at the meetings lol.

I won't be able to make it to the meeting this month because of a grad party for a family member

I have split my frogspawn into 8 frags ready for the next meeting.
I have split my hammerHead into 6 pieces
Plus I will donate / sell some of this leather for cheap

I've also used toothpicks to attach leathers to rocks, just spear the frags and jam them into a rock.

Not bad persay. You might need to keep the leather frags on a rack up off the sand until they heal. The cut area can get infected just like our skin can.

I've never had problems with frags in my DT. The only problem I have is that the flow in my DT blows them all over the place and at times I lose a few only to find them reattached to a back wall/rock. It's kinda neat to see them naturally attaching and then reaching for the light when they grow. Kinda gives the tank a natural look IMO.
