How do those locking nuts for the hose barbs work?

You'd think as you screw them they would push the vinyl hose off.

They work by compression. Push them together, the ridges act as barbs that grab hold of the tube. If you have a connection with stress on it, it is a good idea to put a hose clap on the joint for added protection. You may need to heat up the tube by placing it in hot water if the connection is too tight.
