Just get a test kit for phosphates, read reviews some are more accurate and easier to read than others. Phosphate levels should be at 0 or VERY close to it.
I use the Hanna ULR which measures phosphorus and with a simple calculation gives a reading for phosphate. If you keep coral you want some phosphate. I keep mine between .02-.06.
