I always see flat frags of monti. I have seen tanks with big flat monties like a laying a uncooked pizza on top of the rocks. Yet lots of FTS's with a flower like growth. How is that done?
I am not positive but I think its the flow. I have several but the ones closer to a power head have more curl. mine are not old enough for a full flower look yet but they are getting more layered looking. good luck
Bump..always wanted to know this.My orange monti has grown 7-8 inches on the rock flat as a pizza. But I have a green monti almost a level above the DSB and it has started to cone.Flow on this is less compared to the orange monti. Also have a purple monti close to the pump so far no coning yet still growing flat.
that is a good question. I've been wondering that also. My husband has 3 purple rim/green monte frags from the same parent colony. One is getting the different layers and looks like a flower and 2 are staying flat like a pizza. They all appear to get the same amount of flow. The flowering one he has glued to his overflow box and it is closer to the light. So is it the light or the direction of the flow that is making a difference? I would really like to know because I would like some flowering orange monte cap in my tank.
Strategically place it from the time its a frag and keep adding another different height variant for it to either encrust up or start going down, i forget where i saw someone do it but he was doing it with different sized frag disks, also different shapes and angles
