I have had my Bimac now for a couple of weeks (fishsupply.com)

He eats great but only live food right now crabs and Crayfish

How did you guys get them off of live and get them to eat frozen shrimp etc.

He is still very shy and only comes out went I am not there
If he is out when I walk up he will curl up tight till I leave then zip to his burrow.

So I canââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t really feed him directly
I have tried leaving the shrimp in the tank he did take it out of its shell but did not eat it

Should I just let him get hungry for a few days?

Anything else I should try Clams, Squid?

Hey Ken
I find that bimacs this time of year may take up to two months to settle in and feel comfortable around you. It really changes from bimac to bimac. Like people, they have different personalities.
If you feed like food all the time, the get spoiled. But when they are hungry, they will eat non live food. I use a frozen maine shrimp I buy in a bag. They are red in color and not cooked.
When feeding, I thaw the shrimp out, peel it and then spear it with probe( I use wooden shish ker bob skewers) and then place it in front of the octo. It they are hungry they will take it as soon as it is in front of them. If they won't take it, I wait a day and try it again.
Bimacs will also eat snails, clams, squid, fish.
I recently had a little neck clam that had been living in the tank for a few months. It was left over from trying to feed the last octo I had. It never got eaten and took up residence under the sand. My new bimac dug it up after about a week of being in the tank. The octo was small compaired to the calm but it dragged the clam back to its den and started to drill it. It took about a week and several attempts. It did manage to get it open and eat it. A large bimac will drill a clam in about a day. They will rip a steamer right open.

Here is a interesting article on bimac personalities from the cephalopod page.
