how do you know a shroom/ric is splitting?

Hey!
I've got a few Florida ricordeas and some shrooms that have been looking great and getting big, but I haven't seen any signs of splitting. What gives??

Background: 75g RR, 20g sump, set up for about 7 months, but moved to my new apt. about 4-5 months ago. I had 110w of PC on it for about 4 months and then finally upgraded to a 6-bulb t5 fixture around a month ago. I moved a few shrooms around when I upgraded the lighting, and they seem happier than ever.

But still no splitting! Are there any signs I can look for to know it's coming? I don't want to manually frag just yet (I've never fragged before, and these are my first shrooms, so I want to keep them around).

I've tried feeding bits of mysis, but they're not big eaters. I feed phyto every other day or so. They've obviously grown, but I want babies! Especially from the ricordeas!

Any ideas/tips? Thanks!!

ricordeas multiply pretty slowly...u can get 3 or 4 in a years if conditions are good..u will know when u see another mouth...

If you want several and don't want to let them split on their own, then cut them. new razorblade, one cut, leave part of mouth on each piece.

I'm nervous about fragging them myself the first time.. Ideally, I'd like them to split at least once so that I can use the razor blade method on one and then if it fails horribly, at least I still have 1.

I'm curious about how long it takes...I know patience is a virtue in this hobby, but I'd really like to see it happen soon.

I have a very large healthy hairy shroom that I've had for years and it has yet to split...

Then again, many of my small shrooms have split several times. Seems like some shrooms just need a little "encouraging" in the form of a sharp knife to split. ;)

I dare you to kill a mushroom. Go ahead try it!! Good luck!!

Of course, I'm being sarcastic. It is very difficult to kill a mushroom. I made the mistake of cutting a few off some rocks in my tank. Got in there with a sharp exacto blade and scraped the foot right off the rock. Tossed the mushroom in the frag tank.

3 weeks later I got 4 mushrooms in that spot. They grow back like weeds. I down - 3 sprout back up.

Just slice them right in half. Leave 1/2 the mouth on each side. Whallaa!! Now you got 2. It's really THAT easy. It's the best magic trick in reefing. Cut one into thirds - HAT TRICK!!

LPS Blasto, we have plenty of spare ricordea florida's, does it matter wich size they are when ur gona split them? We have various sizes, from 1cm to 3cm in diameter.

Ricordea Yuma... I think you know they're about to make a new one if they seem to be trying to move. One of mine move about 1/4" of an inch and left a lil foot behind and that lil foot became a small yuma, my other is slowly detaching its leg to move and looks like its leaving a foot behind also.. The florida type actually splits though, I never seen a yuma splits

The Ricordea Floridas I have split from the mouth. 1 mouth becomes 2 then they slowly move apart and then try to become two Ricordeas. It's fairly slow. Personally, I haven't tried fragging/splitting mouth but I have heard that they are fairly hardy and they heal quickly. However, I have done the cut the other mouth away part and it seemed just fine.

Cutting a florida isn't really a problem. You don't even need to cut through a mouth. You don't even need to cut them, a decent rip in half will do. If a florida attaches to two pieces of rubble I will end up with two once I pull them apart. A good healthy tank will allow them to heal completely in just a few days. Parts of a florida without a mouth will grow complete in a couple weeks and start feeding. Letting them divide on their own does create healthier full sized specimens. If they are fed and allowed to divide properly you will in a couple years wind up with a good sized colony.

I do not recommend any kind of division on a prized Yuma let alone Yumas in general.

Actually, yuma can be frag pretty easily. I have a link to an article on how to do it. If anyone is interested, pm me and I can send the link to ya.

My ric has been shrinking and I've debated fragging it to put half in my smaller tank, double my chances of finding what it likes. What do you think? Do you target feed your mushrooms?
