How do you ship live rock?

I just bought 100 pounds of fiji live rock and I only need about 30 pounds of it. I was wondering how to ship it. Is it best just to put it in a box with a bunch of wet towels?

Dry it out and just have dry rock :)

where did you buy it from? I would not pay to have someone send me live rock it is a waste of money and also a big chance to ge unwanted things.

You can definitely go by Wayne's suggestion. :)

Or you can wrap it in wet newspaper is what a lot of major shippers do.

I bought it locally in cookeville from a guy who is turning his saltwater into fresh. So I'm just going to sell what i don't need. I don't want to turn this into a for sale post because I don't have enough posts to do that. I am just wondering how to ship it if it comes down to that.

it really won't matter because it will have to be cycled when it gets where it is going. wet newspaper and /or wet paper towels is a good idea if it is still live. but if it is dry don't bother with anything wet just send it.

just a thought on shipping costs; a gallon of water weighs 8.3lbs. I don't know how much water that live rock soaks up, but it is always in the back of my mind when I buy live rock... "Just how much $$$$ am I paying for U]water[/U]?"

Yeah that would be the best option if i could just find a buyer locally. I was just trying to figure out if I had to ship it what the best method was and how much of a price I should charge for it. Thanks

On the water weight issues... I'll tell you I bought 50lbs of marco rock and it was about 2x as much rock as I thought it would be. And with the lighter weight I think the total was a little over $2 per pound shipped. It's really porous rock, but they definitely soak up a LOT.

Shipping costs are going up BIG TIME...

What kind of rock do you like the most DMBillies? and is there anything wrong with mixing rock in a tank? For an example mixing say tonga and fiji rock together in a tank. and you wern't kidding when you said that shipping costs has gone up. Geez

Rock is mostly your preference (as long as it doesn't have anything in it that could hurt your tank) and there is nothing wrong with mixing. The general consensus is that porous rock is better...

Mine is mostly fiji (from various sources including marco rocks) with a little bit of TBS rock (aquacultured rock from the bahamas I believe), tonga branch, and marshall island mixed in.

Honestly though, my choices were more economical then anything.

From what I have heard, tonga is no longer allowing exports, so everyone better get their tonga while it isn't even more ridiculously expensive.
