Mine is on the sand bed..... I started with a piece about half the size of a dollar bill and in about 8 months its now almost 3ft long and 6 inches wide and is starting to climb the front of the glass.
Mine needs a trim badly and is getting a bit out of control
wow thats crazy. i just kinda want to know an estimate on how fast it will grow monthly because i surrounded the main colonly with small chunks of rock and I am goin to let the colony grow on the little rocks and sell them for like 5$ a frag. i just wanted to know how fast they grow
fast. haha i use mine to grow on my powerhead cords/pump and stuff, look nice and takes off quick.
set a piece on your power head or sumtn leave it on for a week or so, and rip it off (if its your onnly piece as mine was) it left bhind just a sprout but it took off quick! love it.
Colin, if you're trying to get maximum GSP growth for propagation, I would suggest that you grow them on a flat surface, like the sides of your tank. You can also use acrylic sheets:
With a flat surface, you can use a razor blade to cut frags of an appropriate size, and they peel off very easily. Then use whatever method you want (I go for the simplest, rubber bands!) to attach them to rocks, and a few weeks later, they are attached to the rocks, and you're good to go.
Even faster is to use a razor blade to cut the mother colony in strips, then remove every other strip, and cut the removed strips into pieces appropriately sized to attach to rocks. With every other strip "blank," the mother colony will fill in the gaps twice as fast.
That stuff grows super fast. If you leave your hand in the tank for more than 5 minutes, you can get frags by trimming your fingernails and glueing them to a rock. They'll already be covered in gsp
