As for foam under a glass tank, I wouldn't do it. A glass tank is meant to be supported around the outer edge, hence the trim. If you place foam under the glass, you run the risk of a pressure point on the glass which can cause a crack in the glsss.
Acrylic on the other hand is moer forgiving and needs to be supported all the way around. You'd want to use foam on those setups. have you ever seen a manufactured acrylic tank with a trim on the bottom to keep the bottom acrylic off the stand? I haven't.
