how high do fish (wrasses) jump?

I've been wanting a wrasse for quite some time and a spot in my 29g tank opened up recently however i am topless on my tank. my question is how high have you seen a fish jump? are we talking inches or a foot?

i'm thinking of building something like a glass wall that goes up maybe 3-6 inches off my tank and on the back use plastic that can be cut around equip for a tight fit. this would just be some kind of weekend project for fun just to see how it turns out. I don't want to use eggcrate but if anyone has any other suggestions please let me know.

They could clear 6" easily. I've never had wrasses in a non covered tank, but when I FW dipped my wrasse, he came about 2 feet straight up out of a 5g bucket. If he had a little more room to build up speed he probably would have hit me in the face.

wow 2ft, well then i guess i'll just have to wait until my future build for any wrasse. thanks recty
Or build a eggcrete or bird netting top for now, it could be very cheaply made and just temporary until you get a canopy built.

Depends how bad you want the wrasse.

Can I ask why you F/w dipped your wrasse?

Standard procedure on all my fish.

The wrasse in question is a Checkerboard wrasse I had just gotten in from Live Aquaria. I know that wrasses are notorious for not doing well in FW dips, but he made it through just fine, disease free.

Not sure how high they can jump since I have never actually witnessed the act, but have had 5 instances of wrasses jumping out through egg crate and bird netting. Would not even try with an open top tank.

egg crate will not keep most wrasses in unless they are very large and those would not be going in a 29 gallon tank.

I had a few that leaped about 2 feet above the water line and went carpet surfing. Eggcrates are good for large wrassess, but I would use the the clear fish netting that would allow light penetration but still smaller holes to keep the small fish in.

What exactly does the FW dip do though? Same idea as dipping corals?
Yeah, I suppose. I do it in a mix of 37% Formalin and Methalyne blue. Kills almost all parasites before going into the tank. Still a good idea to quarantine afterwards to make sure.

My fish get a dip going into quarantine and a dip going from QT to the main tank.

Recty,

What are the percentages of Meth Blue & Formalin you use per gallon of water?

How long does the dip last?

Ive seen a diamond goby sail about 10 feet horizontally out of a biocube holding cell that couldnt have been much more than 6in wide by 8in deep by 12 front to back.

My solarensis spooked a couple weeks ago when I reached in the tank to move a coral and easily cleared the back glass of the tank by a foot, hit the wall thats a foot behind the tank and landed on the carpet 3feet horizontally from where he left the water. Luckily for him he chose to grab air while I was there and he was back in the tank shortly afterward.

Recty,

The Formalin I use is the 37% formaldehyde, so that is important.

I basically pour in enough methylene blue to make the water dark. Not only does the dark water help the fish calm down, but meth blue is also a helpful oxidising agent, it actually works to help the hemoglobin in the fish veins to carry more oxygen. A good thing in a FW dip that may not have real high oxygen levels.

And then depending on the fish, I do one of two amounts. For hardy fish that handle FW dips well, 2.5 oz per gallon of Formalin.

For my Naso tang and Desjardini tang and wrasse which I hear dont handle Formalin as well, I did just one oz per gallon.

Basically, if in doubt, just do one oz per gallon. Still lethal to external parasites and ones not far into the dermis of the fish. Go with the higher concentration of 2.5 oz per gallon if you've got a hardy fish or if you really suspect disease on the fish.

Keep in mind it's a biocide, i.e. it destroys life, so dont leave your fish in the water for more than 5 minutes. If they start freaking out, go ahead and pull them out early. I've only had one fish freak in the bath and that was the wrasse, all other fish have been pretty good. The tangs went down to the bottom and just kind of sat. I also keep a small powerhead in the 5 gallon bucket blowing straight up so it helps keep the water moving and oxygenated. You can do the same with an airstone. If you use a powerhead, just dont point it sideways so you end up having a swirl going in the bucket.
