I have a 26 AGA Bow front tank set up with various SPS, and a Torch in it. I have a 250 Watt MH 14k bulb over it at the moment. I was curious as the generally accepted or ideal height of the bulb over the water. The Mh is a mogul style base over an open tank. Your input is greatly appreciated.

i believe that 12-16 inches is ideal especially if you do not have a cover for the light itself. this will also help with the salt getting onto your reflector.

Yeah there is no cover between the light and the water. The nice thing is also I have noticed nearly no salt build up on the hood I custome built for the retro fixture. Right now the light is about 16 inches above the water but I just wanted to make sure the light would penetrate well enough to the bottome of the tank should I place other SPS or clams down there. Most animals are currently mid to upper of the tank.
