How long after marine velvet kills should tank be fallow?

Marine velvet got in, or I suppose it was already in. Added tangs from wholesaler who treated with copper then to my quarantine and finally to tank with fish who were not previously quarantined but did not appear sick for months. Two weeks later, velvet and quick death.

So, once tank is fallow (captive bred clowns seem fine/bulletproof though, might try to catch and remove if I can), how long should tank remain fallow (other than inverts of course) before it's safe to start over? I don't see that in a lot of velvet articles, just articles about marine ich.

Clearly I'm devastated... what do others do? Hope to get lucky? Treat everything with a dose of copper just in case or is that a recipe for disaster too?

Thanks! Any fish that survive will get that treatment, or get their own tank going forward. I'll leave it fallow for 10 weeks and after that no fish goes in without Chloroquine Phosphate.

In the meantime I'll focus on coral. I seem to have a knack for coral, but I just suck at fish.

What if I find someone moving or quitting locally, and I purchase their livestock which has been healthy for years, my tank has been fallow for months... am I more safe, or still Chloroquine Phosphate, no exceptions?

If it was me, I would quarantine the all new fish no matter what. I advise to find you a good quarantine process and stick to it. In my case, I give a 50 minute Formalin bath upon arrival, then straight into Tank Transfer Method (TTM), for 12 days for ich treatment. During the TTM, I give 2 rounds of Prazi-Pro (Flukes), then straight into the QT where it receives CP for 21 days, then 2 weeks observation after that, then into, DT if everything is ok.

Good advice, what would/do you do about inverts (including coral)? I suppose they could come from infected water as well.

maybe you confusing fallow after ich and after velvet. 74 or 90 days is ich depending on who you ask. i dont know about velvet my research hasn't got that far yet

Why did you take the copper part out? I just treated my velvet infestation with copper and it was fine.

I would generally avoid copper, but not all fish tolerate Chloroquine Phosphate. For Pipefish, Seahorses and (some) Wrasses CP is outright deadly. Copper is the only alternative with these in case of a velvet infection.
Though I would not use copper prophylactic.

Ahh. I got it. Thanks.
