How long did it take your Rod's onyx to Onyx?

I didn't get my pair of onyx from the same place, but I got a pair about 4 months ago. At this time, the smaller probable-male is starting to turn, and the female is still bright orange. The breeder told me that it's impossible to guarantee that all offspring will become onyx. FWIW....

I have 2 from his september batch and they're both about 3/4 to 1 inch long. Both have 3rd bar started and or completed (1 has full 3rd bars completed, 1 has 1/4 of the 3rd bar started on only one side), and have started turning black (about 25%). All fin tips and between 1st & second bar are mostly black. I think they're 4 months old now. At a glance, onyx is definately obvious. Both have been hosting since I got them in November.

it's been a year and a half and still no onyx. Would love to hear other stories. Thanks.
sounds like there not onyx then. I dont mean to sound harsh but i couldnt word it any other way.

When I called Rod to get mine at the end of Dec, he said he had some that weren't darkening up as fast as others and sold them to me for like $20/25 each. They only have 2 stripes and are about 1/2-3/4", but since I've been feeding them 3 times a day, they've been slowly darkening up. ORA Glo, Freeze Dried Cyclop-eez... seems to be working. I have to reduce feedings though since I'm having problems with cyano now. Rod told me it ould take years for these ones to get to onyx if they're going to get there at all, but said since they look like regular percs he was going to sell them as such.

I'd call him and talk to him. I've only met him once, but he's got a rep as a really reasonable guy, and from talking to him all but 30 minutes, I think he's pretty reasonable too. If you have a pic, send it to him and talk to him to see what's going on. Maybe he'll take care of you with another pair....? Maybe he'll sell them at a discounted rate. There's really no way to know how they will grow up either, in his defense. He picked out 4 for me that bearly started growing a first bar, while most didn't have any bars at all. There's no way of telling how nature runs it's course. I have 2 left, 2 became skimmate. (originally bought 4) Good luck.

This is a pic of my clowns from Rod on the first day I received them. Since this pic their third bars have developed and the black is beginning to come in between the second and third bar.

This one was a left over from a batch slow to color up. Rod said it was 7-8 months old when I got it. This is a pic soon after I got it.(fish on top)

Its said onyx can take up to 1.5 years to become fully onyx, I'm confident mine will be fully onyx even with its really slow start. There are also cases where certian anem's can fade & stunt the black coloration on onyx, this could be the case with yours.

i need to email Rod and ask how old mine were. Mine showed up w/ the 2nd stripe, about 1/2" and one had a hint of black between the two bars and the other didn't. The one that had a hint is starting to blacken up nicely, not nearly like the pics above, but still looking like it might slowly catch up a little. The other is showing black as well, just not as much. This is ok w/ me though since I was going to purchase some solomon clowns in hopes that they'd just get a little black to touch between bars.. I like the red color of Rod's vs. the yellowish of normal percs.

I have a pair of onxy clowns and at first they both had nice black between the first two stripes....no third stripe at the time but now both have like 1/4 3rd stripes.

I got them a RBTA and now one has become larger with black fading....the smaller of the two is darkening up but still not as much as an onxy usually looks like.

Both are about a yr old now.

mine looked like this the day i got them

Now they look like this

i have had them about a year my male just developed the black between 2nd and third stripe.

the black develops in spurts with mine:confused:

This one develops in spurts too.

I'm sorry to see the look of your clowns mdrumm, they look just like something about 6 months old that rod would ship & not developed yet :(

mdrumms male looks like it could be full onyx when it gets bigger even if the female stays as she is.

Is it possible that the rate of color development is nutrition related? For example, I have two Clarkiis that are a little over a year old. They are split between two tanks because one got an eye infection when he was little and went blind. I had to hand feed him for several months to keep him alive.

He regained his eyesight in one eye eventually and can now feed himself, but he is about 20% smaller than the other Clarkii and is much lighter in color. He is finally starting to get darker though now that he's eating more.

Come on, folks. I know one of you has an onyx you can part with. My poor baby is so lonely. Can anyone help a girl out?
