How Long Does A Glass Tank Last

I looked at some manufacturers web sites and after quite a few years in the hobby I am still not sure of the shelf life of a tank. Should they be replaced after 5 or 10 years? How long do silicone seals hold? I have a standard 75 AGA that I have had for going on 6 years. Is it time to upgrade to a 90 Oceanic to prevent a leak or major catastrophe in my home??? Or can I expect my tank to last another 6 years?

Well, I know in my parent's house their windows are so old, they are starting to warp. When you look through the glass, you can see how it's starting to ripple. So I would assume this could be an issue for an aquarium, but thats probably for your kids, or grand kids to worry about. Other than that... if it sits dry for any period of time I usually re-caulk the tank since it's easy enough. Otherwise the caulk seems to dry and out become flakey, and I don't trust it to hold.

So IMO, as long as there is water in the tank, I wouldn't worry about it. If it sat dry for more than a 6 months to a year, I like to re-caulk it.
