How long for clowns to reach maturity?

Hello inachu,

In my experience it takes about 18 months from hatching to first spawning (sexual maturity). It could probably be encouraged to happen much more quickly if the goal were to speed the process (higher temperatures, more frequent feedings, etc). We have had many pairs of several different species spawn at or around this age, so at least for us this seems to be the expected time-frame for spawning. As for the males, we have had them spawn at 8 months "post-hatch" several times when paired with a mature female fish (resulting in fertile eggs that we were able to raise).

I hope this helps :)

Also, captive bred clowns are already several months old before they reach the LFS. I want to say ORA grows them out for a year before they get shipped, but I have no idea where I got the idea, nor can I provide a source.

Small wild caught clowns could be many, many years old by the time you buy them.

There's one clown around here somewhere that's something like 30yrs old, maybe more.
I know I had my Clarki's at least a year b4 one day they just became holy terror's to other fish, looking back I'm sure they were spawning or about too.
Agree w/ fishboy.

As already said, in good care a clownfish can potentially live upwards of 25 years in captivity. I've spoken to a person locally who has had his pair of perculas for 15.
