how long has your return pump been running?

I have a Rio 2100 and has been running for just over two years. I think I have taken it apart once to clean it. So far so good........

Matthew, do your tank a favor and replace that Rio 2100 with something else immediately. Use the Rio to mix saltwater or do water changes like I do, but don't trust your system to that ticking time bomb.

We just had another Rio 2100 melt down in a club members tank earlier this week. The 2100 and 2500 are well known for wiping out a system when it fails.

When you guys say that you cleaned your pumps, how dirty are they when you take them a part? Is there so much buildup that the impeller jams? I am more worried about wearing of the impeller and shaft.

Anyway, I have a Little Giant 4MDsx and it is a great little pump (18 months continous duty). I have used the Little Giants for industrial applications and have always liked them. Seems most people here go with the Iwaki pumps though.

I am using a Mag 7 return pump and I clean it about every three months. I would take the time to clean your return pump. Your pump may run for ever, but cleaning will net you more flow IMO. I clean mine with a tooth brush and a vinegar/water solution.

My Poseidon for a year now. Nothing to speak of there, but in my old tank, I ran the return with a Rio 2100 for almost 10 years.... not kidding. Cleaned it every now and again, maybe yearly, I don' t know.

I don't use Rio's now, but me personally, never did have a problem.

From my understanding the Poseidon and my Velocity are the same pumps. I have two of the Velocity T2s, let me say the silent is an understatement. If it wasn't for water movement I could never tell they were on. ( Two different tanks ) They do tend to run a bit warm, but I haven't had any issues of my tanks being too warm because of them.

HTH

They do add some heat, but if you dont already have heat problems, not really an issue.

We've had a couple issues in my club with them frying tanks. They seem to get hot inside, and can build up calcium very quickly. They shut down, they dont fry tanks like rios, but in a lot of situations if they shut down while your lights are on, you come home to a tank thats 100 degrees.

I've been running an iwaki40 nonstop for the most part of the last 13 years. I clean it sometimes. I replaced the two bearings in it after about the first 10 years of service due to noise. that was $16 well spent. It still runs great. I also have a 30 on my skimmer that is just a year or two newer. My new 100 should be here today! Great pumps!
