I was just wondering. One of my zoas looks terrible. Im not sure why. Its the only one like this.

yeah...unless you see the actual problem i wouldn't do a freshwater dip...do a loguls or if you don't have that try another form of iodine, but concentrate it. lugols is just a form of concentrated iodine.

I have to HIGHLY recommend the freshwater dip fro ANY zoos you are putting in your tank. TMPCC or Seachem Reef Dip will not take care of nudis. I have seen this first hand. Unfortunately I saw it again tonight. A buddy of mine purchased a few zoo colonies from one of the Pacific Northwest areas most reputable lfs's and there were several large nudi's and eggs on them. You need to QT them and FW dip them several times to be sure they are not infested. If you don't, you will pay. Maybe not the first time but it will happen.

At this time, FW dip is the only way I know of that will kill the nudis. I have seen them walk up the side of a TMPCC double dose cup with no apparent distress.

If you notice the nudis, and they look a lot like polyps only gray in color, do an immediate FW dip (same temp.) of ten minutes. This will not hurt the zoas one bit as they will close up and protect themselves. Then swish the colony around in the FW and look for falling nudis. This will also kill most other hitch-hikers on the colony including any kind of mysid, worms etc. with the possible exception of vermitids.

Once you have seen nudis fall off the colony, do a close inspection with the polyps closed up. Here you will find more nudis and their egg sacks. The eggs sacks are difficult too see until you pull the colony out of the water and they look like tiny white swirls with a little speckling. Unfortunately I cannot post a pic of them because my camera just can't do the macro shot well enough.

Then QT the colony...and if you have more than one colony, repeat with all of them. Every couple of days, repeat the FW dip process and closely inspect the colony until you are quite sure there are no egg sacks left.

Seriously, while I am a bg fan of Lugol's and TMPCC, they do nothing to these nudis.

That is a pretty good pic but very up close and believe me, they are hard to find. Mine looked a bit tighter and a little more like a tiny white vermitid swirl, but no way I can get a pic.

IMO, if you have one on the wall, you will have more, but being on the wall does not make it a zoa eating nudi. It might be another kind!!

I guess it could be another nudi that eats something I don't have in my tank. I searched all over the net and books I have to see what kind of nudi it was. The closest pics I found were coral eating types, so I disposed of it. I'll keep looking for others in the tank, though.... just in case.

10 min fresh water dip...WHOA
Most Zoas will be a heap of goo within a few days after a 10 minute dip in FW. If you have to use FW, shaking 45 sec to a minute in FW will kill them. Then keep an eye out for the eggs.

I must have special zoa's too.
What I do would make you cringe. I rinse them under the faucet for 5 mins. and then dip them in dechlor tap for 45 seconds.
never had one die and never transported zoa cooties of any kind.

jnarowe, good luck with your recovery. My father had a massive heart attack 2 months ago. He just went back to work last week. Take it easy and relax.
