How long to let STN continue

Hello all. first i apologize as i'm sure this question has been asked and answered before but i havent found it yet.


I have a coral that is STN'ing, i believe as a result of work-induced lack of husbandry. i've picked up the W/C schedule but 1 coral continues to STN (none of the others ever started to STN, so they're all fine).

It has been steadily creeping up the base over the past couple of weeks. I read that once conditions are corrected it can stop STN'ing and regrow over the base that had previously eroded. How long should i wait for it to stop STN or should i just frag it?

dont want to lose it, but it has been in its place for months and would like to keep it there if possible.not experienced in fragging either and dont want to lose the coral. it's about a 2 inch frag at this point. thanks for any help.

its a thing you gotta deciede when you cant wait any longer, sometimes i just frag right away, other times i wait, and monitor it.. Sometimes it will stop, and other times it wont. Sometimes i use some gel super glue on the area that is dying, and it usaly stops it.. if not then i just frag..

there is no right or wrong here, its a personal thing. Usaly i give it a week or so. if the area is big, then i just frag it.

since the thing is tiny, i would use glue. sorta like a band aid till things get fixed. the acro will grow over it unless its a birdsnest

thanks brian. happen to have any pics of what the "after" looks like on any corals after they have grown or started to grow over the glue patch? or any shots of what it's supposed to look like glued?

Sometimes STN is a natural process, particularly as colonies get large and shade themselves. Sometimes it will start from the base, go for a week or two and then stop when it gets to a part of the colony that is getting more light.

you wont notice the glue at all once the acro grows over it. i dont have any pictures of acros fully encrusted over glue yet. check out my tort in the new corals album. Accidently spilled glue on it. Looks ugly for the time being.
Remember, strong turbulent random flow will help prevent stn
