So I finally got a phosban reactor, now my question is how long will it take for the phosphates to drop, I am running phosguard but I've changednit twice and it hasn't changed.
Start slow and set a goal for 6-8 weeks. Make sure your progress is steady and in the right direction.
How bad is it now? With enough gfo you can strip the aquarium quite quickly but it doesn't mean you should. What kind of tank and issues?
This is just my opinion. Any changes I make are always gradual, probably more gradual than most. I do keep a lot if SPS so that is probably where my paranoia comes from.....
Well all the perimeters are fine in the tank, the only problem is that the tank used to have 5.0 phosphates, ive gotten it down to .5 to 1.0 and i want it to go down to 0 so i can start putting my corals in, i have 6 LPS torch/frog spawns and want to add more but dont want to put them into the tank with all that phospates, in the tank currently i have a rock anemone that has already stuck himself to a rock in a good place so hes happy there, i also have pipe organ and a few small xenias and 3 or 4 different color sponges, But the 200$+ in torch frags i have i dont want none to die, oh i also have a GSP in the 60g that im going to spread on the back wall.
The phospates were threw the roof when I got the tank due to the fact that every 2 weeks he would only do a 5 gallon water change and never cleaned the sump and never even had filter floss, that's why the PO4 was so high, and I'm using the api test kit to test everything.
I'm really not a fan of chasing numbers, your corals will tell you more than most test kits.
That said, Phosphate is a tough thing to nail down, and if you can find someone with a colorimeter to check for you, I bet you find that your API kit is less than reliable for testing PO4.

I agree with DGen- I like API for ALK and Cal but beyond that forget about it. However, if you knew he has high PHO4 maybe you should have stared from scratch.
Also agree with Dgen your kit has to be way off and along with Eddie this should be an easier fix on such a smaller system with disciplined good water changes and gfo or a reactor as I use on a 700gal setup here you go http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2381987
well, ive actually already installed a phosban reactor 3 days ago, where i had the phosgaurd in my wet dry sump it didnt geet enough water flow, so hopefully once i change the phosgaurd it will lower it, i really dont want to take the chance in putting my torches or frog spawns in if they will die, im also waiting to swap things over until i finish my sump, ive already glued everything just need to let it all dry.
