Hello just wanted to get some opinion of what fish I can put in a 40 gallon breeder.

This is what I was thinking

2 oc clowns
1 hippo tang
Kids want the fish above.

1 Gold headed goby

And would really like
1 blue spotted puffer
1 humu humu trigger

Plus cleaner crew

I am new so I am not really sure what is right and wrong.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hippo will outgrow that tank in a hurry and since it will be stressed in that small of tank it will pick on your other fish. They get mean when put in too small of tank. I had one in my 150 gallon and he was still mean. They are bullies. If your kids want a blue and yellow fish put in a yellow tail damsel and tell them it's a baby Dori. Also you can't do the puffer or trigger either. It's either that or you need to be looking at a way bigger tank than a 40 gallon breeder if you want to keep these fish.

Only the two clowns and goby would be appropriate for that size tank. All of the others need much larger tanks, upwards of 180 gallons.

This is a good website to use for a reference on any fish you are thinking about purchasing. They give you a minimum tank requirement and tell you about how to care for the fish and how hard they are to keep. Unfortunately, you can't always trust a pet store because there are some out there that lie to you just to get the sale. It's either that or they employ uneducated staff that don't know how to properly care for the fish. Not all places are like that, but just be warned they are out there. That's why I would encourage you to do research on your own before purchasing any fish.

2 Occ clowns are fine as is the sleeper goby, thats the good part. No way on both the Hippo and the Trigger, they both get quite large and are in no way suitable for a 40 gal. Now for the so-so part, the Blue spotted puffer gets a bit too big but their are other close relatives that will be fine in a 40gal, the Leopard puffer is my favorite, he's still got spots and is quite comical looking and best of all is fine in the confines of a 40 gal.

PS, thats a good tip on the yellow tail damsel but make sure it is either Chrysiptera parasema or Chrysiptera hemicyanea, most of the other Damsels are notorious tank bullies and best avoided in a small tank.
