curious about what kind are good to have i like inverts also i got starfish, cucumbers, shrimps, conchs, clams, but no urchins are they safe to keep i know some are poisonous and some knock over rocks and can ***** corals but it seems some people keep them and i was just curious which ones were good ones

I have a orange and black urchin from aquatic treasures almost a year old the only thing is it will knock things over.

Tuxedos are safe but seem to like to carry frags around the tank attached to themselves. They will eat coralline algae but are relatively harmelss to everything else.

Long spine urchins ( diadema spp. ) are safe except for the long spines and the fact that they knock stuff over. They are not poisonous, are supposed to be good for eating algae but can get rather large and you may find that they will outgrow your tank in a reasonably short while.

I have one that looks just like this

Eats everything. Keeps that rock looking cool, instead of just all purple it's got some good white and other colors now. I think he's a burrowing type. Or something like that, he's got a nice hole bored into a rock.

I've got a pencil urchin that did a good job of cleaning, but he's in a long timeout in the sump because he kept knocking my frags around.

P.S. Phil (Geoxman), won't you rescue this poor guy from his exile?

I have a pink rock boring urchin. Eats the rock and coraline. Hasn't really moved much. He is mainly nocturnal I think. But I can see him all day long in his little hole he has dug. Neat guy. Getting much bigger. When I got him he was maybe the tip of my pinky. Now about the size of a quarter.

I have a pencil and a longspine. My longspine is almost a foot from the tips of his longest spines, he definitly grew fast. If I weren't planning on upgrading in the first half of 07, I would say he has outgrown my tank. My pencil urchin just hangs out, he is about the size of an orange, Neither of them have nock stuff over, my snails on the other hand...

My longspine outgrew my tank (55g) in a 4 months. He also ate all my coralline while he was in the tank, not to mention that every morning and every night I had to put everything back in place.

I have a tuxedo but he's in the sump now. He kept moving my corals, even rocks the size of baseballs and 4X bigger than he was! He moved a small maxima clam to somewhere that I can't find and that was the final straw.
