how many of you dont QT and still have a thriving system?

The reason i asked is because i never QT anything. Just put my newly acquired corals in the main tank and that's it. Now im starting to regret doing that as nothing in my tank seem to thrive. Corals get bleached out from the base, things browned out, got RB and digi eating nudibranch. I've seen people tank that never QT a thing and they look great. Are they just plain lucky? What am i doing wrong?

I don't qt any of my sps. And looks ok but I do do a dip after I aclimate them. Do you do a dip? I do a seachem reef dip then 10 seconds in fresh ro water. Everything is ok. I didn't do a dip once and I good red bugs but that is taken care of now. Heres a picture of the system about 3 months ago.

Most frags are small but growing rapidly. oh yeah the rocks that look dirty are new live rock additions to my tank. I didn't even qt those! I pick up at the lfs and placed in tank. No spike of any kind of water paraeters.

never QT anything in 11 years of saltwalter, no problems w/ corals or fish. not needed IMO if u deal w/ quality suppliers and take caution.

Put bullet in chamber, spin cylinder, pull trigger!

OK, I confess, I'm guilty of playing roulette myself. So far, so good. However, I swear I'm gonna start QT'ing everything. The tank is thriving, and I just gotta stop taking the risk.

I've had a bio-wheel in the sump for the last month or so. I hope I can stop taking the risk. Maybe there is a pill, or a twelve step club I can join so that I Just Say No!

Ditto. My LFS is pretty good at treating new livestock, and he does a visual inspection before he bags stuff for me too. Then when I get home, I just acclimate and do a quick check myself.

Anything that's suspicious from other local reefers and whonot, I'll do a quick FWD, and maybe even some lugol's solution.

It's usually pretty obvious if something is bugging a coral at the store, so you shouldnt be buying it anyways.

I'll have to say I completely disagree with not QTing fish. There is absolutely no way even the best LFS can guarantee the fish has no parasites. You are playing with fire and one day you'll get caught. It is so much easier to treat up front than to catch and treat later.

With corals I now use the Tropic Marin Pro cure coral dip. 15 min and it kills red bugs, FW, and some reports say AEFW(but not the eggs). Before the Tropic Marin came out I did Interceptor, FWE and Lugols dips. I do this even from reefers I absolutely trust as they can have one of the bugs and not know it. Twice reefers I trust posted right after I got a frag that they had found the RB. I was ok because I had done the dips.

i dont qt anything either, i'll acclimate new fish to match salinity and temp, but thats it. corals just get tossed in a frags mounted promptly. i figure a fish has been through enough stress and no need to give him more stress mt qting him and them catching him and releasing him in the main tank sometime there after. if the coral or fish look good at the store then i usualy put a hold on it, that is if i can wait, otherwise i just place it right in the main tank. good water params and a great skimmer do wonders

That's what I put in another thread related to QT.

I just bought a copperband butterfly and a 6 line wrasse on Friday at the store front of www.saltwaterwarehouse.com and was very horrified by the poor health of some of the fish and dieseased systems this guy has. The two that I bought above seemed to be OK but do I want to take the risk of putting them in my dispaly tanks with a disease that might not be apparent even though they look healthy? No, not hardly. They will be in QT for at least 4-6 weeks and maybe even longer to be on the safe side.

Always amazes me at some of the poor excuses we always hear from those that don't QT any and all new additions to a tank.

That about sums it up! :D

If it's wet I QT it. Fish, inverts, corals, etc.

Even if you dip everything before placing them in your system the eggs wont be affected and still have the potential to hatch. A few days ago i found out i have RB and tons of coral eating nudi iin my system. I dosed interceptor and added a six line wrasse. I removed these nudibranch and any visible eggs i can find but im sure there are still some in my system. IF you dont QT and havent been hit with any pest i guess youre pretty lucky???? Sooner or later something bound to get into your system???

You may want to get some other wrasse besides the 6 line for the nudis. I don't think they will touch them but I think there has been talk of some yellow type of wrasse that eats them.

Put bullet in chamber, spin cylinder, pull trigger!

I couldn't agree more.

IMO if you have purchased or traded any # of sps corals in the last 3 or 4 years and haven't quarantined/dipped them you have coral parasites. You just haven't seen them yet if you think you don't;)

i concur. Just because you havent seen them in your system doesnt mean you dont have any. But a good indication of infestation is coral health..No PE, bleaching etc.

FWIW an infested coral can, and usually does, appear totally normal. It takes time, and sometimes a magnifying glass, for the effects to show. On some they never do.

Depends on the source, the coral.

But I QT or at very least dip everything. After losing 90% of my Montipora collection to lack of QT [nudis] ... I'm a lot more paranoid about it.

Red Bugs were a pleasure compared to Monti nudis ...
