How many of you don't use glove?

I buy these disposable gloves off ebay. They are cheap. They are used to put your hand up a farm animals you know what. Seach ebay for them.

No gloves for me. I have a tomato clown that would attack my fingers, then I DID smack it with a little wooden dowel and he now stays in his corner. The only thing that gets me now is the occasional splinter from my brittle star.

Are you guys afraid of not just animals attacking you, but perhaps some bacteria or other toxin in the water getting into your fingernails or small cuts you might have?

After reading about palytoxins I always wear gloves putting my hands into the tank. I use the tunze gloves which cost a lot, and leak if you accidentally do anything =P I have the coralife gloves, but are so bulky it feels like I"m working with my feet in the tank.

I was thinking of doubling up on gloves each time, but holy it gets expensive once you break one pair every use.

None of my fish dare to attach me ..... if they do they will become fish on the stick in no time ..
Something in the tank stung me. It could be some kind of bacteria because I can't find any mark on my hands.

Uhh Mark... you know you shouldn't be petting your brittle stars against the grain right?

Rub them gently they will be much happier for it.

LOL

Mark you gotta tell me the story how you get hit by a brittle star!!

:D

I never used gloves before but will now after what happened to me recently. I washed my hands with some of those liquid soap that also scrub off the oil and grease. Then later I rearranged some of my rocks. The next day all of my fishes got sick and die a couple of days later. I have a FOWLR system. All the snails and shrimps had no problem. My Rose annemone was also fine.

so you guys aren't scared of what toxins / bacteria you'll pick up for your own health, but instead are afraid of killing your animals and/or getting bit / stung by them?

haha, that's great =)

Maybe I'm just too overly cautious after reading those toxin articles.

Kinetic has a good point.....

Especially the Zooanthid stories I have read. Scaaarryyy....

I honestly do not let my 3 year old child touch the water in any of my tanks, but as for myself... I am not too concerned about it.

I don't use gloves when cleaning out the kitty litter (tho I do wash my hands vigrously afterwards...).

I take the same approach when dealing with the tanks. I wash vigrously right away with soap. The key is right away and not sometime after, once you have touched your face or eyes or any membrane surface.

I will also try and used the hand which doesn't have any cat scracthes on it either........ LOL

As for introducing toxins into the water.. I tend to have this superstition that the gloves that I may be using would leech all kinds of chemicals into the tank...... especially cheap ones.

On that note.. what good are gloves, if they leak or are not long enough and water fills them up??

One more thing... I would argue that getting hit by a mantis, would be far more detrimental to my health, than most of the common toxins found in fish tanks......
That is why I don't pet my Mantis!!

I purchase disposable latex gloves from Costco. A three box packages is really cheap ($9ish) I also wear them when fragging or grabbing rocks. I even have grab bristle worms with them. Sure - water gets inside the glove, but who cares. I just toss them when done. I also use the same gloves for mowing the lawn, cleaning out the cat litter, doggie duty, oil changes, etc. Ok - the kids do the cat litter and the doggie duty. Anyway - my point is that they are cheap and versatile.

I also have a pair of Corallife Aqua Gloves. As someone mentioned, it deaden all senses and are difficult to use. In addition, they SMELL really bad from the sweats. I don't use them any more.

Trust me - it still smells.

lol gross, sweaty smells =P you should at least rinse the insides out too then after you use them! ;)

Well, 9 of my small tanks are mantis tanks, so I try and keep my hands out of them entirely. Only a few mushrooms as far as corals go, so it's not a big deal, trying to 'work' in these.

I have a 30 that contains a baby dwarf fuzzy lionfish who likes to swim up to my hand ( :| ), as well as a 'mystery' urchin that I inherited from a friend who got out of the hobby, lots of zoanthids,etc...reason enough to use gloves (I do about 75% of the time, just forget the other 25%).

My 46 has lots of zoos as well, and I use the gloves.

Those ugly orange/purple aqua clear (Clear up to your shoulders...).

I did, in the past, get something in a cut from a zoo.polyp of some sort, and I felt sick for 3 hours or so (Sort of like a bad acid trip, er...not that I know what THAT feels like...).

Say 'Yes' to gloves.

I was fragging some zoas a week ago until I accidentally squirted some zoa toxins on my cut. It was so darn painful that everytime I touch my water I wear gloves.

I bought wooden tongs (bamboo actually) from Kamai (the restaurant supply/kitchenware store on Clement in SF) and I use them along with my thick aqugloves, it gives you a bit more control than using the fingers of the gloves.

I also have a 13 inch "Hemostat" which is basically a long steel grabber, but it can be clumsy.

I have been stung by something in the rock - hurt like a m%^&%^%&^ - you get the point - only to have to examine the sting to find something resembling a nematocyst stuck in my hand.

If I handle the rock I use the orange and purple gloves. If it's for cleaning I use a scraper with a handle. If I have to pick up a lost coral it helps if you curse, and then reach for it have it almost in your grasp only to have it fall out at the last second - proceed with more cursing or yelling "Yahtzee".

Okay, more seriously if I have my hand in the tank I always wash my hands real well with soap afterwars and follow up with lotion due to my dry skin issue.
